Programme Officer, Somalia
Expected 4-month fixed term contract until 31st July 2024
The salary package for this position is £37,800 GBP per annum / approx. $47,879 USD per annum, including all allowances.
About MAG:
MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is an international humanitarian organisation based in Manchester, UK, and working in 32 countries. We remove landmines and unexploded ordnance to release safe and productive land for communities, and work to reduce the threat of armed violence by supporting governments to safely manage weapons and ammunition. In 1997, MAG was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for our work campaigning for the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.
About the Somalia programme:
MAG supports the development of countries emerging from conflict by finding and destroying the explosive remnants of war, so that communities can raise their families and pursue their livelihoods in a safe and secure environment, free from fear of death or injury. MAG first worked in Somalia in 2001 and has had a sustained presence in the country since 2008. The MAG Somalia programme is operating in a complex political and security environment with operations firmly established in Somaliland and future plans to expand back into Puntland and South and Central Somalia. The main area of focus in Somaliland is Weapons and Ammunition Management (WAM).
About the role:
The Programme Officer will be responsible for leading on and managing the process of proposal development, report writing, grant management and assisting the Country Director to meet contractual requirements. You will work closely with both UK colleagues in Manchester and MAG’s operational staff in Somalia, managing and coordinating programme information and data to accurately draft proposals, reports and assist the Country Director to monitor contractual compliance. You will also work closely with the Country Director to create and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in Somalia including donors, partners and other parties as required.
About you:
The successful candidate would ideally have experience working overseas on development/ humanitarian projects and will be able to demonstrate the ability to work independently with minimum supervision. They will have proven experience in developing donor proposal and high-quality donor reporting as well as report writing and knowledge of budgetary requirements and how to build a budget for a project delivery. Research skills are essential to the success of this role as is the ability to work in dynamic teams of national and international staff. Excellent literacy, numeracy and IT skills are a requirement. Fluent English language skills are essential for this role, knowledge of Somali would be seen as advantageous but not required.
Experience of Humanitarian Mine Action and working in Africa is desirable for this role but not essential. As is knowledge of relevant institutional donors, legal issues in relation to contracts and charity and company law and knowledge of Physical Security and Stockpile Management (PSSM). A passion and demonstrable experience of working on cross cutting initiative such as Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Safeguarding and the Environment would be highly desirable.
Areas of operations are often remote with basic amenities, so applicants will need to be able to deal with living and working in challenging environments.
