UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.
Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.
And we never give up.
For every child, education
The fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does — in programmes, in advocacy and in operations. The equity strategy, emphasizing the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families, translates this commitment to children’s rights into action.
UNICEF’s education programme in China aims to ensure that all girls and boys, especially the most marginalized, are learning and acquiring skills that prepare them for life and the future of work, in an inclusive, healthy and safe environment.
China is home to second largest population of young people globally, there are approximately 230 million young people between the ages of 10 and 24, constituting 16.5 per cent of the total population. The country is currently undergoing a profound demographic transition with an aging population that increasingly puts pressure on the younger generation, along with high competition for educational and job opportunities. Youth unemployment is a pressing concern.
Youth development has been incorporated into China’s national strategies. Medium-and Long-term Youth Development Plan (2016-2025) is the first set of national guidelines for youth development. In April 2022, State Council issued a white paper entitled “Youth of China in the New Era”. This systematically prioritizes health and wellbeing, education, and skills (quality), employability and entrepreneurship (access to decent work and productive employment), and active participation in social activities and global governance and participation.
In terms of participation/civic engagement, globally young people have become a driving force for societal change through social mobilization and meaningful participation – pushing for climate action, seeking racial justice, promoting gender equality, and demanding dignity for all. Young people in China have high potential to seize every opportunity to participate in public policy making and lead the ecosystem for youth development (innovation capacity, economic dynamism, infrastructure and connectivity, security and governance).
The UN in China, in collaboration with Chinese government and relevant stakeholders, is committed to addressing these issues by promoting equal opportunities for all young people, with a particular focus on vulnerable groups such as girls and young women, youths with disabilities, rural youths, ethnic minority youths, migrant youths, and youths living with HIV, among others.
