Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for the Natural Sciences Sector (ADG/SC), and direct supervision of the Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen in Doha (DIR/FU/DOH), the incumbent will assist the Member States of the Regional Office in Doha (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Yemen) in the preparation, execution, monitoring, and follow-up of UNESCO’s programmes and activities in the field of natural sciences notably in terrestrial environmental, water sciences, disaster vulnerability, and risk management. S/He will also support Member States and the regional organizations in their efforts to implement National Development Plans and the United Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks (UNSDCFs), and contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The incumbent will be responsible for providing professional and technical support, research and analysis, with an emphasis on the national and regional contexts, to develop, implement and evaluate programme initiatives to promote learning and sustainable societies, and support Member States in advancing science, technology, innovation, research and engineering to address contemporary environmental and societal challenges towards the implementation of the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science.
S/He will work as part of the interdisciplinary team in the Regional Office in Doha collaborating with relevant stakeholders and with technical guidance from Natural Sciences Programme Divisions at UNESCO Headquarters and Natural Sciences Programme Specialists from other regional offices of the Arab Region amongst other regions. UNESCO’s salaries consist of a basic salary and other benefits which may include if applicable: 30 days annual leave, family allowance, medical insurance, pension plan etc.
The approximate annual starting salary for this post is 102 914 US $.
