Mission and objectives

For two decades, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has been helping make the world safer from drugs, organized crime, corruption and terrorism. We are committed to achieving health, security and justice for all by tackling these threats and promoting peace and sustainable well-being as deterrents to them.
Because the scale of these problems is often too great for states to confront alone, UNODC offers practical assistance and encourages transnational approaches to action. We do this in all regions of the world through our global programmes and network of field offices.
The Office is committed to supporting Member States in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at its core. The 2030 Agenda clearly recognizes that the rule of law and fair, effective and humane justice systems, as well as health-oriented responses to drug use, are both enablers for and part of sustainable development.

Context

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Country Office for Pakistan (COPAK) is tasked with assisting Pakistan through its Country Programme (CPII) 2016-19 with a focus on needs related to illicit trafficking and border management, criminal justice and drug demand reduction and HIV/AIDS. Diplomats from Pakistan regularly engage with migrants in European countries, often facing language barriers and irregular immigration status issues. Recognizing the crucial role of consular officers, including Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) liaison officers stationed at different locations, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is assisting the Federal Investigation Agency and Ministry of Foreign Affairs in building the capacity of relevant officers through training workshops and conferences. The main purpose is to enhance the capacities of these officers in providing assistance to migrants, especially women, and in combating trafficking effectively. Additionally, UNODC also hosts regional conferences regularly involving key stakeholders from regional countries. This year, the plan is to invite key stakeholders including Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Libya, Greece, and Italy to further regional cooperation on trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is seeking the assistance of a National UN Volunteer to support the Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling (HTMS) team in organizing these events. The volunteer will play a crucial role in ensuring the seamless execution of these events, contributing to the overall success of the initiatives.
