Programs Manager – Clean Steel

Environmental Defence Canada (EDC) is a leading Canadian environmental advocacy organization that works with government, industry and individuals to defend clean water, a safe climate and healthy communities. Salary range is $70K-$75K depending on experience. This role will be reporting to the Associate Programs Director.

Purpose of the Role

We are seeking an experienced Program Manager to lead Environmental Defence’s efforts to advocate for Canadian steel makers to commit to and map out a credible plan to reach net-zero.

The Program Manager will be responsible for leading Environmental Defence’s efforts to build the case for clean steel in Canada, co-creating and leading the development of an overall strategy and a work plan, coordinating activities with partners, and assisting with fundraising proposal development. In this role you will work with a robust team of communications, public engagement and campaigning experts.

Canada has reserves of high quality iron ore that could be produced without  metallurgical coal, which could significantly reduce emissions by the steel sector in Canada and internationally. Some Canadian steel makers have already committed to decarbonization efforts and to moving to Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs)with the support of the federal and provincial governments. Canada has a relatively clean electricity grid and the capacity to generate significantly more clean energy. But the steel industry hasn’t committed to net-zero, and progress on reducing emissions is spotty.

Canadian steel makers could have a competitive advantage when it comes to clean steel, a product that will be in greater demand globally as the world seeks to decarbonize and reach net-zero emissions. As Canada embarks on “nation building” and exploring industrial strategies that maximize opportunities in the clean economy, it’s time for the steel industry to fully commit to industrial decarbonization to benefit Canadians and our shared climate.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Be EDC’s point person for a campaign strategy and plan to be developed with coalition partners.
• Coordinate and facilitate regular meetings with coalition partners.
• Support community partners with communications materials and strategic advise
• Support and assist in the development of a government relations, communications and public mobilisation strategy to build support for clean steel.
• Prepare briefing notes and other submissions on government policy.
• Research the benefits of clean steel and stay up to date on developments in that area.
• Produce relevant communications-ready information that can be used for blogs, video, website text, press releases, op-eds, newsletters, social media content, reports and act as the media spokesperson.
• Assist with writing grant applications and funder reports.

Skills and Experience

• 5+ years experience working on environmental issues or public policy with government or an NGO
• Deep understanding of climate change solutions and impacts, industrial decarbonization, and demonstrated experience working on issues and coalition-based campaigns.
• Knowledge of the steel industry is a plus.
• Strong political awareness and strategic insight
• Project management experience an asset
• Experience with government relations, media and/or politics a plus
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Thrives in a team environment, and can build strong working relationships
• Efficient time and workload management skills

Location
This role will be a hybrid role, part time in the Toronto or Ottawa office and part time work from home.

Compensation
