Founded by young cancer patients, our mission is to provide essential programs, services, and resources that positively impact the lives of 12-25 year-olds facing their own diagnosis, dealing with a close family member’s cancer, or grieving the loss of a loved one. About the role
Canteen’s success is built on the capability and motivation of its people. We are now seeking a Programs Officer to join our team where you play a key role in Canteen’s psychosocial practices by creating meaningful opportunities for Young People to connect with others who get it and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of young people through their Canteen experience.
This is a high-energy role for a natural communicator who is able to engage young people, volunteers and the general public about our work. As part of a high-performing team, you’ll enjoy a culture of collaboration, growth and continual learning.
- Design and deliver a portfolio of fun and engaging in-person and online peer support and recreational events for Canteen’s service users.
- Facilitate the youth leadership program in line with Canteen’s leadership framework.
- Conduct thorough risk analysis of all activities in line with Canteen’s risk management guidelines and operating procedures.
- Plan accurate estimation costs of yearly events, recreation activities and overnight programs with the State Manager.
- Ensure events and activities are actively promoted with all promotional materials and social media activity compliant with Canteen’s brand guidelines.
- Attend and promote Canteen at relevant meetings, conferences and networking forums as identified in your state/territory plan.
- Adhere to all child protection policies and procedures including monitoring ‘working with children checks’ for volunteers and local leadership participants.
About you
- Tertiary qualification (Bachelor’s degree and upwards) in Sport/Recreation Management, Youth Work, Education, Human Services, Health Promotion, Community Development, or related fields
- Experience working with young people
- Demonstrated skills designing engaging events, recreation programs and programs with psychosocial practice elements (e.g. structured group work time)
- Experience in group facilitation, coordination, and management
- Strong organisational/project planning and time management skills.
- Outstanding communication skills and a natural ability to connect
- Current open driver’s license, ability to obtain a first aid certificate and the flexibility to travel interstate, work weekends and evenings (with notice) are essential
Nature of Work
Location: Brisbane
Job type: Permanent Full-Time. Hybrid Flexibility
Due to the nature of Canteen’s work, you will be required to (very) occasionally work weekends and evenings. Advance notice will be given when this is the case, and Canteen does have a Time off in Lieu policy for taking leave as agreed with the supervising manager.
Employment Expectations

- Successfully complete and maintain a current National Police Check and Working with Child Check relevant to the individual’s state jurisdiction.
