UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
The work of UN Women in Moldova is guided by its , aligned with the , , National Programs and Strategies and aims to contribute to the gender-responsive implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Strategic Note focuses on four main areas: 1) Ending Violence against Women; 2) Women’s Leadership and Governance; 3) Women’s Economic Empowerment and 4) Humanitarian and Peace development nexus and UN Coordination on Gender Equality.
The private sector is increasingly recognized as a key player not only to drive economic growth but also to promote sustainable social development, and companies are being held to account for their impact on society. Access to personal income can help boost women’s self-esteem and bargaining power at home and within communities and reduce the likelihood that they will be exposed or will remain in abusive relationships. Women’s access to income produces broader benefits as women tend to reinvest a large proportion of their earnings in children’s education and health.
According to the latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics of Moldova, about 33.9% of all enterprises were owned or managed by women. A larger share of women-owned firms is a single person enterprise or a micro-business, that generates lower revenues and is smaller in size than those owned by men. Women’s underrepresentation in leadership roles, unequal pay, and limited access to financial resources are among the key barriers hindering women’s full participation in the labor market and entrepreneurship. All these play as a barrier to women to access decent work, for self-affirmation, welfare and fundamental rights. To address these issues, Moldova has enacted laws and policies promoting gender equality and women economic empowerment, including programs to eliminate violence against women, advance women’s participation.
In this respect UN Women works to strengthen capacities of the Parliament and Government to develop, adopt and implement legal, regulatory and policy frameworks, as well as care service provision models that create decent work for women and that support the reduction and redistribution of unpaid care work and more equal sharing of care and domestic work between women and men, including developing the legal framework and piloting for alternative childcare services. As well, support is provided to Women-led enterprises to be more resilient to crises and have strengthened capacities to efficiently utilize resources, generate decent employment and green economic development and jobs, and innovate to enhance productivity and competitiveness. In particular, assistance is provided to women most often left behind, have improved access to adequate protection and safe working conditions, employable and competitive skills.
