Mission and objectives

IOM GEO organization mission TBD

Context

UN Volunteer will support the implementation of IOM’s programming on promoting sustainable reintegration of returned migrants through holistic approach to migration management in Georgia. The current programmatic phase aims to contribute to the sustainable reintegration of returnee migrants in Georgia, by strengthening the capacities and responsiveness of national and local stakeholders, as well as horizontal and vertical coordination, enhancing economic opportunities and social linkages of returnees, and increasing their access to finance and effective investment of remittances. Programmatic actions take place at individual, community and structural level, across three dimensions: economic, social and psychological, in line with the IOM Integrated Approach to Reintegration.
In the context of the above programming, special attention is paid to gender related aspects and dynamics. Return and reintegration has different pace and impacts on men and women, depending on their roles, responsibilities, and capacities in the society. Women are often more exposed to vulnerabilities and face more barriers to sustainable reintegration, due to gender roles and norms, limited access to resources, information, and decision-making, their greater care burden for children, elderly, and sick people and also have specific needs and rights that need to be addressed during the reintegration. However, women are also agents of change, as they have valuable knowledge, skills, and experiences that can contribute to sustainable reintegration and community development.
IOM has been operating in Georgia since 1993 and has established strong partnerships and cooperation with the government, civil society, private sector, and diaspora actors, as well as with the migrant and returnee communities. IOM has also been implementing the Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) programme in Georgia since 2003 and has assisted more than 6,000 migrants to reintegrate in their country of origin.
