Terms of Reference

Consultancy Title: Secretary of the Iraqi Social Forum and Baghdad Project Coordinator

Duration of contract: 3 Months (renewable)

Duty Station: Baghdad/Iraq

 

Brief description of the organization:

Al Mesalla for Human Resources Development is a non-governmental organization established in 2004 registered in Baghdad and Erbil with headquarters located in Erbil. The organization is working at disseminating a culture of human rights and peace building in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The organization is currently working along 3 programs: A non-violence and peace building program developing peace capacities within the community; a women and Gender program empowering women to take an active role in the community and a Human Rights Program which focuses especially on enhancing freedom of expression. Since June 2014, Al-Mesalla developed services to the growing refugee and displaced community settling in the Kurdish Region of Iraq by participating to distributing emergency support and establishing… empowerment and livelihoods programs for displaced women in particular.

 

The Iraqi Social Forum:

As a culmination of the Iraqi contributions to the World Social Forum movement during the first decade of the third millennium, and as a legitimate extension of social justice movements in Iraq for decades, the Iraqi Social Forum was established in 2013 as an open space for movements, organizations and individuals who believe in the principle of social justice and human rights in their global sense and in their political aspects – Civil, social, economic and cultural. Those who work to build an effective civil society to contribute to consolidating the building of an Iraqi civil state.

 

Background of the project:

This project aims to strengthen the voice of civil society in Iraq, focusing on protection of the environment and of civic freedoms. The project will work towards improving civil society capacities in planning and implementing strategic advocacy campaigns; improving coordination among civil society actors in central/southern Iraq, Iraqi Kurdistan (KRI) and international civil society; and improving civil society advocacy initiatives so as to ensure civil society’s effective contribution in preserving environment and civic freedoms in Iraq.

 

Responsibilities of Project Coordinator:

  1. Holding Monthly Meetings of ISF
  2. Note taking of the meetings
  3. Communication with Baghdad and South of Iraq CSOs
  4. Supporting Project Manager in Project Implmentation.

 

Reponsibilities as Secretary of the Iraqi Social Forum:

 

  1. Supervise the Forum’s executive body and volunteer teams across various tracks.
  2. Implement work plans, programs, and activities for different tracks alongside the secretariat members.
  3. Be responsible and accountable to the National Committee for ensuring optimal completion of work and its follow-up.
  4. Submit annual reports to the National Committee, including an achievement report and a financial report.
  5. Select employees and volunteers for the secretariat based on professional and transparent standards.
  6. Propose new tracks or amendments to existing tracks of the forum to the National Committee.
  7. Propose and select contributors for workshops, specialized training, and external contributions to the National Committee.
  8. Assign tasks to coordinators of volunteer teams, campaigns, and paths, and provide follow-up and direction.
  9. Undertake communication, coordination, and collaborative work with the International Solidarity Team.
  10. Prepare plans to enhance the capabilities of volunteer teams and address their needs in this field

Qualifications & Preferred Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Solid understanding of project management methodologies and tools.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Familiarity with [Microsoft Excel] is desirable.
  • Knowledge of Iraqi civil society context
  • Excellent spoken and written Arabic and English.
