JOB DESCRIPTION

Result of Service
Successful completion of Project Risk Framework and contributions to the feasibility analysis in Nigeria.
Work Location
Home-based in Nigeria
Expected duration
6 months with possibility of renewal
Duties and Responsibilities
The UN Environment Programme’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is a data-focused, action-oriented initiative that drives deep reductions in methane emissions – the second biggest contributor to global climate change and a key opportunity to reduce warming in the near-term. IMEO’s mission is to provide the open, reliable, and actionable methane data needed to cut emissions at the speed and scale necessary to achieve the Paris Agreement goals. To do this, IMEO is harnessing a methane data revolution under way thanks to rapidly advancing technology and momentum for methane action. IMEO collects, integrates, and reconciles data from methane-detecting satellites, scientific measurement studies, rigorous industry reporting through the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), and national emissions inventories. These initiatives are game-changers for climate action – and as a core implementing partner of the Global Methane Pledge, IMEO is shaping the future of methane mitigation. IMEO is seeking a Project Coordinator to manage on-the-ground planning and execution of the Nigeria Methane Emissions Reduction Pilot Programme (NiMERP). NiMERP aims to assess multi-sectoral methane emissions in Nigeria and to build local capacity for methane measurement and mitigation. NiMERP will be implemented by UNEP’s IMEO, which will support Nigeria’s effort to improve data on methane emissions and build capacity towards measuring, quantifying, and mitigating these emissions. The intended outcomes of the NiMERP are to (i) deliver a science study to measure methane emissions across sectors (agriculture, waste, and oil and gas) to deliver an empirical methane baseline and (ii) to build awareness and capacity in academics, other stakeholders as well as relevant ministries on methane emissions and mitigation opportunities. This position will be remote and based in Nigeria.
Qualifications/special skills
Master’s degree in environmental studies, management, sustainability, or a related field, or a Bachelor’s degree plus two additional years of relevant work experience. At least five-years-combined full-time and part-time, paid or unpaid- professional experience with relevance to energy, climate change, sustainable development, support to environment/development projects, and/or working with/in developing countries is required. Familiarity with project management support, such as organising workshops and stakeholder consultations is required. Experience interacting with government agencies in Nigeria is required. Experience managing scientific projects in Nigeria is desired. Experience working with climate and development stakeholders, international organizations, and technical partners is desired. Familiarity with greenhouse gas and methane emissions in at least one sector (energy, agriculture, waste) is desired.
Languages
English is the working language of UNEP. Fluency in English is required for this position.
Additional Information

The Project Coordinator will be responsible for: • Identifying relevant stakeholders and building relationships to facilitate project planning and execution; • Establishing and facilitating partnerships with relevant institutions, including governments, international organizations, regional agencies, the academic community, and civil society; • In coordination with the Project Steering Committee (PSC), the Project Coordinator will establish the necessary infrastructure and working arrangements for project execution; • Providing input to the PSC and coordination of inputs into project planning and implementation activities; • Coordinating with PSC regarding necessary project modifications or refinement to achieve project goals; • Designing and updating a project risk management framework; • Maintaining and updating the project M&E framework; • Liaising between UNEP, the European Union Delegation to Nigeria, the Nigerian national government, and other relevant national and regional partner agencies and stakeholders; • Supporting activities related to the baseline study feasibility analysis; • Supporting planning of in-country training workshop; • Conducting field visits and international missions, as required, to facilitate project outputs; • Acting as public liaison for the project, coordinating communication and dissemination of information to ensure maximum project “visibility” with UNEP guidance.
