Project Manager – Empowering Women to Lead Rangelands Conservation Project

POSITION SUMMARY – This position is based in Nairobi, Kenya

The Project Manager will leverage CI’s work in the Northern and Southern Landscapes through the GCF-funded Towards Ending Drought Emergencies (TWENDE) project and the investment in the landscape including, the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT), and partners in both northern and southern Kenya. The Project Manager will oversee the implementation and coordination of gender-related initiatives across the landscape. Specifically, the Project Manager will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Empowering Women to Lead Rangelands Conservation interventions, ensuring its successful planning, execution, and completion within specified timelines and budget. This role requires strong project management skills, leadership capabilities, and the ability to collaborate with stakeholders to achieve project objectives.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee the development and implementation of gender-related landscape management strategies, ensuring alignment with conservation and livelihood objectives.
  • Develop a detailed project work plan, timeline, and budget in coordination with project partners on gender-related activities.
  • Coordinate and supervise project activities, ensuring alignment with the project goals and objectives throughout the landscape.
  • Monitor progress, identify risks, and proactively address challenges to achieve project milestones.
  • Foster strong relationships with stakeholders, including communities, government agencies, and private sector partners.
  • Facilitate preparatory planning processes and ensure inclusivity in decision-making.
  • Coordinate multi-stakeholder meetings, workshops, and consultations to gather inputs and build consensus.
  • Manage project resources efficiently, including budget allocation and expenditure.
  • Ensure transparent financial management and procurement processes per organizational policies and procedures.
  • Establish a robust monitoring and evaluation framework to track project performance and outcomes on gender results across the landscape.
  • Prepare regular progress reports and documentation of lessons learned for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with donor requirements and project commitments within the landscape.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The position requires traveling up to 30% of the time to counties in the Northern and Southern Kenya landscapes.
  • Travel is conducted only when safe to do so and per CI policies and country-specific mandates or restrictions.
  • The position requires the ability to work in non-traditional and extended settings.
  • Guidance on flexible work arrangements will be shared during the interview process.
  • This is expected to be a 2-year assignment.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • A Bachelor’s degree and 4 to 6 years of Gender Equality experience in Kenya is desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, including local communities, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations.
  • Persuasive and engaging communication, presentation, training, and facilitation skills to convey objectives to diverse audiences and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently under pressure, with a proactive and problem-solving attitude.
  • Ability to make quick decisions, be diligent with responses, work to find solution-driven conclusions, and work collaboratively across many audiences.
  • Proven ability to set priorities and meet critical priorities.
  • Excellent and persuasive oral and written communication skills; professionally assertive with the ability to influence without formal authority and capable of managing conflict and conflicting views.
  • Demonstrated ability to work, manage, and meet competing deadlines in a fast-paced, high-volume environment and on deadline; aptitude for problem-solving and decision-making needed.
  • Experience working with local communities, specifically women groups, on gender-related work.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, including local communities, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations.

Preferred

  • Familiarity with the socio-economic and environmental context of southern Kenya is desirable.
