Project Manager: Fuels Reduction and Fire Hazard Mitigation

South Willamette Solutions (SWS) is seeking a Project Manager to oversee the implementation of fire hazard mitigation and fuels reduction projects funded by state and federal grants. This position will advance regional efforts to create fire-adapted landscapes and improve forest health and resilience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage implementation of fuels reduction treatments on both private and public lands
  • Work with residents to implement Firewise and Fire Adaptability Community goals by improving defensible space and home hardening

Duties include:

  • Digital and in-person coordination with private landowners for project development and implementation
  • Support outreach and communication efforts to advance public awareness of fire adaptation goals and projects
  • Coordinate with federal and state agency partners to identify and prioritize treatments
  • Create and maintain a project timeline commensurate with identified priorities
  • Use SWS databases and direct outreach activities
  • Coordinate work done to improve defensible space in the 100-foot space around dwellings
  • Oversee and coordinate contractors doing fuels reduction work
  • Conduct site visits and develop working knowledge of existing and potential project areas
  • Conduct quality control visits to ensure contractors adhere to all rules and regulations and the prescription treatment contract
  • Track project progress and prepare regular reports for SWS and FS
  • Manage project budgets and contractor payments
  • Assist in planning for potential prescribed burning activities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred
  • 3 years of professional experience in forestry, fire science, natural resource management, or related field
  • Successful candidate will be enthusiastic about meeting and communicating with a variety of people from a variety of backgrounds very frequently
  • Experience in proactive project management with the ability to create a work plan independently
  • A fundamental understanding of fuels reduction techniques, fire behavior, and fire ecology
  • Experience managing forestry contractors
  • Proficiency with mapping and spatial data, preferably with GIS systems
  • Experience using computer software, i.e. Microsoft Office, Google Suite
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to build and sustain trusting relationships with various stakeholders
  • Team player with the ability to collect diverse input and move forward in a positive, productive way
  • Familiarity with federal grant requirements and contracting procedures
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to work in rugged field conditions
  • Preference will be given to candidates living in the Oakridge/ Westfir area and/or candidates with experience working with government/ nonprofit/community development

The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of regional conservation issues relating to forest health and resilience, experience working with Tribes and Indigenous communities, and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion principles.

This position is funded for a 3-year term with a 90-day trial period. Possible term extension based on grant funding.
