JOB DESCRIPTION
MaPEMA PROJECT MANAGER
Organization Background: –

Center for Public Health and Development (CPHD) is a Nairobi based non-profit organization working to improve health systems through training and other innovations in the East and Southern Africa region. CPHD combines local capacity with global knowledge to empower public and private health sector workers to improve access to better quality health services for the people they serve. Today, CPHD is leading a number of innovative projects in the region that seek to fast-track attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
MaPEMA project aims to introduce and support the POCUS (Point of Care Ultrasound) The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends one routine early ultrasound scan for all pregnant women, but more than 50% of women in developing countries receive no ultrasound screening during pregnancy. This is because in low-income settings, ultrasound machines are in short supply. Further, they are bulky and expensive and require training to operate and experts to acquire and interpret the images. These experts are in short supply as well. Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) and AI-Enabled POCUS can be useful for the detection of maternal, fetal, placental, and umbilical cord-related obstetric risk factors, complications, and emergencies. In enabling early intervention including timely referral to the correct level of obstetric care, it can give mothers and unborn babies a fighting chance and help reduce preventable deaths and complications. Kenya has had multiple programs aimed at putting simple, portable ultrasound devices in the hands of non-traditional medical imaging health workers such as nurses, midwives, clinical officers, and general practitioners for the detection of potential obstetric problems in health facilities without sonographers and radiologists. Advances in ultrasound technology, rechargeable batteries, and system design have allowed increasingly innovative products with improved portability, better resolution, and easier usability for non-imaging workers to become available.
