Position Description: The Mule Deer Foundation (MDF) is seeking applicants for a Project Manager to assist with habitat projects on the Plumas National Forest (PNF). The position is afull-time, field-based, entry level position and will help deliver the mission of MDF. The Project Manager will work closely with MDF staff and US Forest Service personnel to plan, implement, and monitor projects associated with the MDF Supplemental Project Agreement for the Plumas NF Wildfire Crisis Landscape. The incumbent will be supervised by MDF’s Senior Partnership Coordinator and work duties will be directed by MDF’s Conservation Forester. Project work will include, but not be limited to: project planning, project layout, timber marking, and quality control inspections, and monitoring. The initial work will focus on projects within PNF’s Claremont Forest Resiliency Project and Community Protect Initiative primarily located to the south and southwest of Quincy, California. The overall project objectives aim at protecting our communities from wildfire through active forest management, while providing for enhanced habitat, watershed, and soil conditions. Appropriate field equipment will be provided. The position is based out of Quincy, California, serving the Plumas County area. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborate with other MDF employees and USFS staff.
  • Assist with the planning and development project design and scope of work.
  • Timber marking and possible timber cruising.
  • Project layout and boundary mapping.
  • Project quality control inspection, administration, contractor oversight, and documentation.
  • Reforestation planning.
  • Monitoring.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent, A.S preferred
  • Knowledge or experience or education in forestry, wildlife management, ecology, wildfire, or related field. 
  • Familiarity with northern California forests, deer habitat, tree species, basic mensuration, and silvicultural techniques.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with NEPA and U.S. Forest Service procedures is preferred.
  • Proficient skills in map reading, Avenza, GPS use, and forest mensuration tools.
  • Driver’s license.
  • High degree of self-motivation.
  • Must be able to independently hike and navigate steep, brushy terrain.
  • Some weekend work could be required
