Project Manager – River Enhancement

The position of Project Manager presents an exciting opportunity centered on developing and
executing a suite of projects aimed at enhancing river systems within specific catchment areas
(Nidd and Swale). The role responsibilities encompass every phase of a river and freshwater
project and programme management, from the initial idea to the planning, design, and delivery.
We are interested in candidates with existing knowledge and experience in delivering freshwater
projects in order to expand the Trust’s delivery capability and capacity.

The role will involve working closely with our Senior Catchment Officer, Catchment Partnership
(Dales to Vale Rivers Network (DVRN)) members and a wide range of other stakeholders to
identify opportunities to improve river catchments. The candidate will therefore need to be
comfortable working with (for example), other YDRT staff, NGO’s, government organisations,
local communities, landowners and volunteers. The individual in this position must be at ease
handling data regarding the project’s costs and benefits, and effectively communicating this
information to a range of audiences.

The post will be responsible for obtaining additional funding through a variety of mechanisms
to ensure projects are able to be delivered and executed successfully. The individual must
therefore be comfortable and experienced at submitting funding applications and obtaining match
funding.

Projects may typically include weir removals, fish passage easements (such as rock ramps,
nature-like bypasses, or technical fish passes) and river re-naturalisation projects (such as
habitat enhancements, reconnecting and rewetting floodplains & paleochannels,
re-meandering, and backwater creation, wetland and pond creation). We would be interested to
know about any experience you have in the above fields when you apply.

The role will require hybrid working, with a desk available in the YDRT office in Pateley
Bridge, home-working and travel across the catchment. The post holder will be flexible, with
occasional evening and weekend working. The post-holder will work well both alone and as part
of a team of paid staff and volunteers.

The Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust

The Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust is a registered charity with a mission to enhance and protect
the rivers Swale, Ure, Nidd, Wharfe and Ouse and neighbouring catchments by delivering
practical and educational projects, engaging with communities and working in partnership.

The Trust undertakes a wide range of practical projects to improve the water quality and
habitat of rivers and streams and to inspire other people to care about these environments.
This includes working with farmers, landowners and communities to reduce water pollution,
improve river habitat, address barriers to fish migration, and reduce the risk of damage from
flooding. Volunteers have always been an essential component of the Trust, assisting with
practical conservation work, monitoring and events.

The Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust also hosts two catchment partnerships as part of the
‘Catchment based approach’ initiative, which act to facilitate working and coordinate
activities across the catchments.

The Trust evolved from a group of committed volunteers and is now overseen by a board of
volunteer trustees. The Trust currently employs nine members of staff who are home-based with
occasional use of office space at Pateley Bridge. The working culture of the Trust encourages a
professional, committed and independent approach.
