Background
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with support from the Federal Government of Nigeria, established a bespoke Innovation Centre in Lagos to: (i) serve as a physical space with technical expertise and programmes to catalyze growth in Nigeria through innovation and digital transformation; and (ii) power Pan-African transformation by hosting a premier thematic hub on Fintech under the timbuktoo Initiative.
The timbuktoo initiative was launched by the UNDP Administrator, Mr. Achim Steiner, and the UNDP Regional Director for Africa as well as the Presidents of Rwanda and Ghana at the World Economic Forum in Davos as part of UNDP’s efforts to bolster the innovation ecosystem across Africa. With an ambition to mobilise and invest US$1 billion of catalytic and commercial capital, timbuktoo is a multistakeholder initiative that brings together government, business, and academia to power Africa’s socioeconomic transformation through startup innovation. It seeks to create a future where innovation is encouraged, ingenuity is supported, and prosperity is shared. The goal is to transform 100 million livelihoods and create 10 million dignified new jobs across Africa. It relies on the three key pillars of University Innovation Pods (UniPods), timbuktoo Hubs, and the timbuktoo Foundation.
The Fintech timbuktoo Hub is one of the eight thematic hubs, located in Lagos, Nigeria. The Hub is anchored within the UNDP Innovation Centre. One of the initiatives of the Fintech Hub is the timbuktoo Fintech Startup Accelerator Programme, a Pan-African initiative that will incubate and scale Africa’s most innovative startups contributing to socio-economic development.
The Accelerator Programme has commenced implementation, and a call has been launched for startups leveraging technological innovations in the financial sector promoting sustainable and inclusive growth on the continent. Upon the expiration of the call, an inaugural cohort of Fintech startups will be selected to participate in the accelerator programme which will include an impactful bootcamp with a week-long physical residency in Lagos. The cohort will be officially onboarded during the Fintech Festival in Lagos in July 2024, and this will coincide with the official launch of the UNDP Innovation Centre and the Fintech timbuktoo hub, Lagos.
Scope of work:
Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Head of UNDP Lagos, the firm shall provide event management and coordination services for all events to be organised as part of the Fintech Festival as detailed in the terms of reference.
