Main Purpose:

Providing psychological support to patients according to MSF principles, standards and procedures in or-der to improve the patients’ mental health.

Accountabilities

 

  • Carrying out evaluation of mental health needs of patients and establishing a diagnosis and a plan of treatment. Informing the patient and his/her relatives about the possible consequences of the illness and the drug treatment to follow and referring patients to other health professionals whenever necessary, in order to provide the most appropriate treatment and improve the patient’s condition
  • Implementing the Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) protocol, identifying possible victims of SGBV and referring them to the medical team so that they receive the necessary treatment.
  • Providing psychological support and psychotherapy sessions (individual, family, group) to patients according to MSF protocols in order to improve their mental health conditions
  • Assisting and training staff members and resourceful people whenever necessary in order to enhance the scope of MH activities. Working in close collaboration with translators in order to ensure appropriate terminology and behavior during sessions
  • Collecting statistical and monitoring data about mental health activities
  • Informing the supervisor and the medical team about any issues or problems that may arise related to patients’ treatment in order to provide the best possible solution from a medical perspective
  • Ensuring that all patient information is kept confidential.

MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities

  • Establish a relationship of trust with clients, agreeing a counselling contract to determine what will be covered in sessions (including confidentiality issues); encouraging clients to talk about issues they feel they cannot normally share with others, actively listening to client concerns and showing empathy, accepting without bias the issues raised by clients; helping clients towards a deeper understanding of their concerns, challenging inconsistencies in what clients says or does, helping clients to make decisions and choices regarding possible ways forward.
  • Provide psychological and social support for both patients and families to contribute to their emotional wellbeing.
  • Implement the Gender Based Violence protocol, identifying possible victims of GBV and referring them to the medical team so that they receive the necessary treatment.
  • Ensure availability during work hours to support medical activities (e.g. reachable by phone at all times except during sessions with clients, be responsible for radio communications, among others).
  • Work together with other team members to prepare/produce various mental health psychosocial education messages/topics, according to specific group needs (e.g. caretakers, children, adolescents, victims of violence, etc.)
  • Plan and provide psychosocial stimulation and recreational sessions for children in the Child and Family Space, including their caregivers.
  • Extended flexibility to accept and carryout any other task(s) within the purview of the job where requested by supervisor/line manager.

Requirements

 

  • Education:

Essential degree or diploma in Psychology.

 

  • Experience:

Essential previous working experience of at least two years as Psychologist.

Desirable experience in MSF or other NGOs in developing countries.

 

  • Knowledge:

       Desirable computer literacy (word, excel and internet)

 

  • Language:

       Proficiency in English mission language is essential. Local language “Arabic” desirable
