The Psychotherapist will provide specialized psychosocial support (PSS) and mental health and psychosocial support services (MHPSS) to Iraqi returnees. Working closely with the MHPSS team, including the MHPSS Coordinators, Case Managers/Social Workers, Outreach Mobile Workers, PSS Facilitators, and Psychiatrist Doctors, the Psychotherapist will play a critical role in the coordination and delivery of mental health services. This position is based in Mosul, within the MHPSS Centre, and is aimed at supporting the recovery and well-being of returnees.
key Responsibilities:
Clinical Support:
- Conduct psychological assessments and develop individualized treatment plans.
- Provide individual and group therapy sessions to returnees.
- Offer crisis intervention and management.
Coordination and Collaboration:
- Coordinate closely with the Psychiatrist Doctor to manage and follow up on MHPSS cases, particularly those requiring psychotropic medication.
- Collaborate with MHPSS Coordinators to ensure seamless service delivery.
- Work alongside Case Managers/Social Workers to provide holistic support to clients.
- Engage with Outreach Mobile Workers to identify and reach out to those in need of MHPSS services.
- Support PSS Facilitators in organizing and conducting psychosocial activities.
Medication Management:
- Follow up on cases that require psychotropic medication in coordination with Psychiatrist Doctors.
- Monitor and evaluate the effects of medication on clients and report any concerns to the Psychiatrist Doctor.
- Assist clients in understanding their medication regimen and address any issues related to adherence.
Capacity Building:
- Provide training and support to other MHPSS staff on mental health issues and best practices.
- Participate in team meetings and case conferences to share insights and develop strategies.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of all sessions and interventions.
- Prepare regular reports on the progress and outcomes of therapy sessions.
- Contribute to the development of MHPSS program reports and proposals.
Community Engagement:
- Engage with local communities to raise awareness about mental health and available services.
- Work with local authorities and organizations to ensure comprehensive support for returnees.
Qualifications & Preferred Skills
- Education:
- A bachelor’s degree in psychology, Clinical Psychology, Counseling, or a related field.
- Additional certifications in trauma-informed care or specialized therapeutic techniques are preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in providing psychotherapy and counselling services.
- Previous experience working with returnees, refugees, or in post-conflict settings is highly desirable.
- Experience in coordinating with a multidisciplinary team.
- Skills and Competencies:
- Strong clinical skills in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health issues.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
- Fluency in Arabic; proficiency in English is an advantage.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work in a challenging and dynamic environment.

This Terms of Reference (ToR) outlines the roles, responsibilities, and qualifications for the Psychotherapist position at the IID’s MHPSS Centre in Mosul. The Psychotherapist will be a vital part of the team, ensuring that Iraqi returnees receive the psychological support they need to rebuild their lives and effectively managing cases that involve psychotropic medication in collaboration with the Psychiatrist Doctors.
