This internship announcement is valid for two (2) candidates who will intern in the Visitors Services Section. Visitors Services is part of the Outreach Division, Department of Global Communications in New York City which engages and educates people and their communities worldwide to encourage support for the ideals and activities of the United Nations. The Visitors Services Section interfaces directly with the general public to offer guided tours of UN Headquarters in New York and briefings with UN expert speakers, as well as a Public Inquiries counter where visitors can obtain information materials and ask questions. Please visit: www.un.org/visit for more information about Visitors Services. The internship is in-person, unpaid and full-time but could also be part-time. When full time, interns work five days a week (35 hours) and when part-time, they work less than 34 hours a week. This is under the supervision of a staff member in the Unit(s) within the Visitors Services Section to which they are assigned, although they also support the operation as a whole. The hybrid or remote setting of the internship may be considered based on request by the successful candidates, the nature of the tasks, needs of the Units and/or Section, and the discretion of the manager. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the Unit to which he/she is assigned, and the period during which he/she undertakes the internship. Interns’ responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting with planning and organizing outreach activities to educate the public about the UN’s work
  • Providing support for the organization of guided tours, briefings, and events
  • Conducting research on UN thematic issues
  • Providing general office support (drafting correspondence and other communications, setting up and maintaining files/records and databases, organizing meetings, etc.)
  • Assisting with taking photographs and videos to promote Visitors Services
  • Assisting with drafting media content for the Visitors Services Facebook and Twitter accounts
  • Responding to visitors’ queries in-person and in writing
  • Assisting with the development, implementation, and analysis of surveys on visitors’ experience
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent).
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience; however, a field of study that is related to the type of internship is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (Bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme.
  • Good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word and MS PowerPoint, is required. Ability to draft short articles and/or social media posts is desirable. Ability to take photos and videos, with basic knowledge of editing and retouching is desirable.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for this internship.
