Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Geneva. The incumbent will be under the overall supervision of the Spokesperson / Chief of the Media and Public Positioning Section.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: – Assists the Speechwriter with drafting and editing of effective speeches, op-eds, articles, video scripts, talking points and other written materials by the High Commissioner for public dissemination to diverse and specific audiences. – Assists the Speechwriter to identify and research critical and complex issues. – Proof-reads, fact-checks and reviews materials with appropriate staff at Headquarters and in other offices to ensure that all information is accurate and up-to-date. – Assists the Speechwriter to coordinate the dissemination of the High Commissioner’s written contributions on line and via social media. – Monitors and reports on impact. – Assists the Media Section in conducting additional media-related work, as required. – Performs other related duties as required.

Education
Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent degree) in communications, journalism, public relations or other relevant field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible work experience related to communications, speechwriting or journalism, including at the international level is required. Demonstrated experience in articulating policy positions in published written materials is required. Proven experience in writing on human rights issues is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

THIS POSITION IS TEMPORARILY AVAILABLE FOR 3 MONTHS, STARTING ON 1 JULY 2024 UNTIL 30 SEPTEMBER 2024 – SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY OF FUNDS. While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.
