Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Hindi Unit, News and Media Division (NMD) of the Department of Global Communications (DGC). The News Section produces daily news and feature stories, magazines programmes, special series and creates audio content using live and recorded audio from meetings and events, and multimedia pieces for the UN News digital platform, incorporating audio and video elements, as well as social media content. Through these products UN News provide daily and weekly content in nine (9) languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Hindi, Kiswahili, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian). Incumbent reports to the Chief of the News I Section.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority and depending on location, the Public Information Officer may be responsible for the following duties: • Ensures implementation of information programs to publicize priority issues and/or major events, to include drafting information strategies, coordinating efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up action, and analyzing the outcome. • Monitors and analyzes current events, public opinion and press, identifies issues and trends, and advises management on appropriate action/responses. • Produces or oversees production of a specific type or types (e.g. print, broadcast, etc.) of information communications products (e.g. press kits, press releases, feature articles, speeches, booklets, brochures, backgrounders, audio-visual materials, radio spot program, etc.), to include proposing topics, undertaking research, determining appropriate medium and target audience, preparing production plans, writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalizing texts, editing copy, and coordinating design approval, printing procedures and distribution. • Prepares, on the basis of official UN documentation and other sources, and under the direction of senior editorial staff, multimedia content, and provides assistance in developing, generating, news and distributing multimedia feature materials. • In consultation with others, identifies and proposes information opportunities, activities and approaches for promotion of Hindi News content, taking into account the situation/topic and target audience. • Carries out in-depth and ongoing analysis of the performance of UN News and the performance of the Hindi News content specifically to optimize audience-focused communications. • Drawing on new digital tools and modes of enhancing existing partnerships, tools and software, assists with carrying out innovations, providing instructional guidance on the use of new digital tools, along with strengthening distribution practices across all languages and formats to ensure broader and engaged audiences for key messages and organizational priorities. • Monitors performance across platforms of Hindi News content with a view to enhancing distribution via the UN News app, Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, and Mailchimp and responds to requests for reports, ranging from annual reporting to intergovernmental bodies to real-time thematic and other reports drawing on Google analytics and social media metrics • Prepares reports that tie into the broader reporting requirements of the UN News platforms. Initiates and sustains professional relationships with key constituencies. • Acts as focal point on specific issues, monitoring and reporting on developments, responding to inquiries, etc. • Participates in selecting the information transmitted to key constituencies. • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public relations or related area is required. Experience creating multimedia content in Hindi and English, along with fluency in written English and Hindi is required. Experience in project management and reporting on extra-budgetary projects is required. Experience in compiling web analytics and social media metrics is desirable. Experience in working on improving search engine optimization, distribution, partnerships and promotion is desirable. Experience in drawing on existing modes of distribution for Hindi News content to regional and Diaspora audiences and optimizing presence on multiple platforms to improve impact is desirable. Experience in creating web graphics and using innovative digital tools including immersive website applications like Tableau and PowerBI is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in both English and Hindi is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Assessment
