We are offering a part-time (3 days per week) opportunity for a Publications Coordinator within the New South Wales Bar Association’s Professional Standards and Membership team.

The New South Wales Bar Association is a professional association for practising barristers and associate members, such as clerks and judges. We promote the public good in relation to justice and the provision of legal services. This is achieved by promoting and maintaining the highest standards of excellence among local practising barristers.

About the Role

The Publications Coordinator’s primary responsibilities will involve subediting and coordinating the publication of Bar News (released three times per year) and providing support to the editor of Bar News, production of the Annual Report and administering InBrief, the daily online news bulletin circulated to members of the NSW Bar Association.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Perform sub editor duties for Bar News magazine
  2. Undertake research as needed
  3. Liaise with the designer and draft copy for Bar News magazine as needed
  4. Manage production timeline and printers
  5. Arrange for distribution of printed magazine
  6. Purchase images, processing invoices for payment, obtain Viscopy licenses
  7. Send and file copyright release
  8. Commission photo shoots, send Dropbox requests for uploading of images, and obtain releases from the subjects to use the images
  9. Perform the role of secretary to the Bar News editorial Committee which involves attending regular meetings, arranging the meetings and drafting agendas and minutes for each meeting
  10. Editing and production of the Annual report
  11. Assist with writing sections of the Annual Report
  12. Work with the team to ensure the content of the Bar Association web site remains relevant and up-to-date
  13. Administering InBrief
  14. Monitor the Publications budget

The successful applicant will have the following essential skills and aptitudes:

  • Experience as a sub editor of a magazine
  • Demonstrated experience in a project management or publications role
  • Good communication and organisational skills and an ability to work collaboratively
  • Demonstrates initiative
  • A commitment to high work standards and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to meet deadlines and ensure tasks are completed on time
  • Ability to work in a small team environment and autonomously
  • Proven ability to be flexible, resilient and reliable
  • Ability to foster mutually supportive working relationships and information-sharing
  • A proven ability to communicate well with members/clients as well as external stakeholders
  • Ability to manage a high-volume work environment
  • Flexible problem-solving skills
  • An understanding of the role of barristers, judges and solicitors is desirable.
