Pygmy Rabbit Survey Technician

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking four nongame technicians to conduct surveys for pygmy rabbits in southwestern Wyoming. The work schedule will vary depending on weather, and may require weekends and multiple days in the field at a time.  Technicians should expect to use snowmobiles, tracked vehicles, and snowshoes to access survey sites in the winter.  Positions will last from approximately January 1, 2026 to March 31, 2026.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed in the job level.

• Conduct surveys for pygmy rabbit sign, including identification of frequently confused species
• Use 4 x 4 vehicles, snowmobiles, tracked vehicles, and snowshoes to conduct surveys in winter, including loading and hauling trailers
• Collect data with close attention to detail following established protocols
• Enter and proof data
• Communicate with a variety of individuals to coordinate and schedule surveys, including agency and industry personnel and the public

Qualifications

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS: 

Preference will be given to those with a high school degree plus 2 years of experience in fish and wildlife resource management, research, or habitat development or 2 years of college course work towards a baccalaureate degree in wildlife management, or another closely related field.  
                                                              
 ** Agency requires that the successful applicant must have a valid driver’s license.

KNOWLEDGE: 

• Experience with winter driving and over snow travel using snowshoes, snowmobiles, and tracked vehicles is preferred
• Experience working in adverse field conditions (e.g., deep snow, cold temperatures) is preferred
• Must be reliable, communicative, and able to work safely in remote locations and challenging conditions
• Must pay close attention to detail, both in the field and while coordinating schedules
• Experience using hand-held GPS and maps for navigation and data collection
• Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to operate a 4WD vehicle

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

• Technicians will be required to work independently or in a team of two in remote locations
• Must be willing and able to safely travel and conduct field surveys in winter conditions, including snowy terrain and freezing temperatures
• Work schedule will be variable and subject to change on short notice; this includes working long hours, early mornings, or occasional weekends, as needed
• This position will involve a considerable amount of time driving to and from field sites in a Department vehicle
• This position will require the use of hotels for which the technician must initially pay and get reimbursed

• Positions are based in Lander, WY. Necessary equipment and vehicles will be provided while in the field. Housing in Lander will not be provided. Employee will be asked to utilize hotels while performing field work. This will involve paying for a hotel room at the time of use and receiving reimbursement later.
