Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana is the state’s largest hunger relief organization and one of the leading food banks in the Feeding America Network. In additional to vital hunger relief programs in our 21-county service area, we also operate Fresh Connect Central, a regional produce cooperative for Feeding America, serve as a contract reclamation site for Kroger Central Division, and are a staging site for FEMA disaster response.

Position Purpose:

The Quality Assurance & Food Safety Specialist provides support in the areas of product quality and food safety. This will be accomplished by ensuring consistent production and distribution of quality, safe product by following regulatory and industry guidelines. They will be responsible for establishing and auditing the products and processes at various points in the areas of warehousing production and packaging to ensure adherence to Gleaners quality standards. They will perform all jobs safely, accurately, and efficiently to improve and maintain the performance of the entire operations in the areas of Safety, Quality, Reliability (SQR) and our strategy of putting the Customer first. Essential Functions of the Quality Assurance & Food Safety Specialist :

  • Develop and auditing the products and processes at various points in the areas of warehousing production and packaging to ensure adherence to company quality standards.
  • Record and analyze product and inventory data, working with all departments throughout the distribution center, creating and improve processes to ensure order product freshness and accuracy.
  • Perform routine inspections of temperature-controlled products and ambient to ensure that product meets Gleaners standards for quality on all produce that will be ordered by our agency partners.
  • Inspect finished product pallets to ensure that picking and palletizing practices adhere to our standards.
  • Report issues, concerns, and improvements to maintain the integrity of the SQF system.
  • Communicate and work together with management and production workers to develop and maintain systems that promote quality.
  • Provide guidance to staff on food safety/quality control questions.
  • Coordinate with departments to redistribute products according to food safety guidelines.
  • Maintain expiration guidelines. Enter and manage expirations dates into our inventory system.
  • Work with the Director of Food Safety & Quality Assurance to conduct site walks and product swabs in accordance with AIB International standards. Maintain the temperature logs and equipment calibration schedule.
  • Visually inspect and restack products on pallets in accordance with food safety specifications.
  • Ensure compliance and adherence to all food safety guidelines according to GFB, Feeding America, AIB, USDA, FDA, ISDH, Health Department, and any other applicable processes or regulations for safe and sanitary production and storage of all products.
  • Assist The Director of Food Safety & Quality Assurance with Food Safety, such as Clean Room Packaging Center, training, audits, etc.
  • Conduct cycle counts of pallets in pick locations in all departments to ensure accuracy of product.
  • Execute agency return orders for all product returned, crediting agencies and pantries for returned product and returning it to the appropriate staging areas in the warehouse for future orders.
  • Operate PIT equipment according to Gleaners and OSHA guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements of the Quality Assurance & Food Safety Specialist :

  • 2 years of experience or Associate’s Degree /equivalent.
  • Food Safety, Lab and/or Science experience preferred.
  • Experience in a warehouse, food manufacturing environment, with production processes and the production environment.
  • Must become certified in AIB, HACCP, FSPCA, ServSafe for Managers and PCQI within 6 months.
  • Must become certified in first aid and CPR, safe food handling and in the use of powered pallet jacks.

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, written communication and presentation skills
  • Strong customer service skills and experience with working with the public.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills, including Excel.
  • Basic math and problem-solving skills.
  • Integrity, enthusiasm, flexibility and a strong work ethic.

Physical Demands and Work Environment of the Quality Assurance & Food Safety Specialist :

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms.
  • Utilize multi-limb coordination and flexibility combined with control precision to perform fine motor skills including: finger manipulation, grasping, feeling, arm-hand steadiness, in order to push, pull or lift objects
  • Utilizes multi-limb coordination to balance on even or uneven surfaces, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, stand, and walk, reach over shoulders or below the knees.
  • Ability to lift and/or and move 20-50 lbs. regularly and to push/pull 2,000lbs. of product using manual pallet jack.
  • Ability to speak clearly.
  • Ability to operate machine, mechanical, and electrical equipment.
  • Work involves occasional maneuvering at heights at or above six feet.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • The work environment will include prolonged exposure to refrigerated temperatures and sporadic exposure to freezer storage conditions.
  • Work is primarily indoors, and will be a combination of processing, warehouse, and office areas.
  • Possible exposure to dust, fumes, smoke, excessive noise, and/or vibrations.
  • Work generally performed in a warehouse or industrial environment (indoor) with various hazards and noise exposure.
  • Moving vehicles and equipment; Machinery/equipment in use.
  • Works well with others and independently.
  • Verbal face-to-face contact with others
  • Flexible work schedule, including ability to work weekends and evening hours as needed.
