We are seeking a Quantitative Analyst to work in .How will a Quantitative Analyst contribute to Nesta’s success?The following list sets out the core tasks the Quantitative Analyst will be expected to participate in. We don’t expect you to be an expert at this stage, but we want you to come to Nesta with a growth mindset where you are ready to experiment and learn.Your main role in the team will be to support the delivery of quantitative work in our “a fairer start” mission projects – applying your analysis and research skills to help us make progress on our key strategic focus areas.The following are some examples of the sorts of projects you might be expected to contribute to, dependent upon your skills and experienceWorking with external sector stakeholders to analyse their data and produce results in the form of reports and dashboards which are useful, insightful and impactful.Designing online and field experiments (RCTs) to test the impact of innovative interventions on families and children.Analysing national datasets to better understand the needs of children and families that the “a fairer start” mission focuses on.The roleAs a Quantitative Analyst at Nesta you will:Deliver data-driven projects that advance the a fairer start mission, ranging from research and analysis to dashboard development;Design and scope projects in collaboration with technical colleagues, domain experts and practitioners from other disciplines;Communicate outputs of your work to a wide range of internal and external audiences;Alongside other quantitative and data science specialists,ensure that all quantitative analysis work is reproducible, sustainable, and ethically consideredhelp the team stay at the cutting edge by keeping abreast of new techniques and developments in the field and seeking ways to use them;Tasks may include:Quantitative analysis – using statistical and / or data science methods to perform descriptive and causal inference. You are comfortable with managing, cleaning and analysing a range of datasets. You are willing to learn about new methods that you don’t know.Reviewing existing research – critically appraising and summarising quantitative evidence on a given problem. You should be able to interpret common research statistics and critique research designs.Communication – disseminate the team’s work externally, which may include producing reports and slide decks for partners, writing blogs, public speaking, stakeholder engagement, and leading new and creative ways to communicate ideas to different audiences.Project ideation – Ability to design statistical or data science approaches to answer new questions;Project management – you can manage your tasks within projects from start to finish, have experience with project management tools or are willing to learn to use them , can identify and proactively communicate project risks, and can work as part of a multidisciplinary teamStakeholder management – you can work closely with internal and external stakeholders in project delivery, provide clear updates on project progress and actively contribute within meetings.Domain knowledge – get to grips with new areas, topics and contexts that the range and variety of your projects take place in. You will need to quickly build contextual competence in unfamiliar topics (e.g. learn what key jargon means, be credible in conversations with stakeholders, understand what is measured and what is important).The personEssential:Data analysis skills: you can code in Python or you are familiar with a syntax based coding language (e.g. Python, R, Matlab, Julia) and are willing to learn Python. You can process data, conduct exploratory data analysis, create visualisations and extract key summary statistics and trends. You are highly knowledgeable about any of the following concepts: sampling, hypothesis testing and statistical significance, experimental and quasi-experimental design, causal inference, and machine learning.Quantitative research skills: you understand the fundamentals of exploratory research and evaluation and can develop hunches or take a well evidenced position based on such research. For example, you can interpret research findings of others, understand common statistics (such as standard deviation, confidence intervals, p-values, and correlation coefficients) and assess the strength of evidence for something.Presentation skills: you can report back on research findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders in a range of settings, including presentations, slide decks, research reports and blog postsProject management skills: you can plan work and execute against that plan; identify risks and issues, raising these appropriately within the team.Communication skills: you can communicate clearly and effectively, tailoring your style for different audiences. You are confident in explaining complex ideas in simple terms, ask thoughtful questions to build shared understanding and contribute constructively in group settings. You are able to engage confidently with both internal and external stakeholders, supporting collaboration and alignment across multi-disciplinary teams and organisations.Domain knowledge: some knowledge or experience in the practice, policy or research context of the Fairer Start mission. This might include through previous work, research, study, or personal experience working in the early years and/or education sectors.DesirableKnowledge of early childhood development and UK early years policyExperience delivering data science or analytics projects at pace;Experience using Git and GitHub (or equivalent) for version control;Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams making use of mixed research or innovation methods.Experience of working in a policy context for a consultancy, think tank or other fast paced research environment.Skills and QualificationsA Bachelor’s or Masters qualificationWhat we offerSalary: £37,400 – £51,400 plus array of benefits, including private medical insurance, dental insurance, the ability to buy and sell annual leave, eyecare vouchers and moreLocation: This role is based in London, hybrid working arrangement with a minimum of two days in the officeTerm: PermanentHours: This is a full-time role but we offer a range of flexible working arrangements and encourage our people to take advantage of them.
