Company: Real Time Research, Inc. (RTR; www.realtimeresearch.com) is located in Bend, Oregon and specializes in data collection, analysis, and technical writing involving fish and wildlife of conservation concern in the Pacific Northwest. RTR has been conducting biological research, monitoring, and evaluation studies for more than 25 years and is seeking an Associate Scientist that has experience with fish ecology, statistical analyses, and technical writing to be a part of our team.
Job Duties: Work will involve data collection, assembly (sourcing, curating, compiling, QA/QC), analysis, and authorship of technical reports and research grants/proposals. Datasets will involve active and passive fish tagging studies (PIT, AT, PBT, and others), aerial and benthic surveys, water quality, and other environmental data and datasets. Studies will include predator-prey interactions involving piscivorous colonial waterbirds, quantifying factors that limit the abundance and survival of ESA-listed fishes, the fitness and survival of hatchery fish, and other applied research topics in the Columbia, Klamath, and Sacramento-San Joaquin river basins. Work will predominantly occur in the office, with occasional fieldwork and travel. Data management tasks will include the compilation and preparation of datasets using SQL Server, Access, Excel, R, and other tools. Data analyses will involve mark-recapture survival modelling, spatially explicit analyses, and multivariate analyses using both Bayesian and frequentist statistical approaches. Technical writing will include the preparation of scientific reports, research grants, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and oral presentations to clients, colleagues, and the public alike.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in fisheries, ecology, or related field, with demonstrated coursework in statistics.
- Practical experience working on studies of applied research (fisheries strongly preferred), experimental design, and hypothesis testing.
- Experience with database compilation, mining, architecture, and management.
- Experience with data analysis tools and software (proficiency in R, GIS, AI knowledgeable)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills (peer-reviewed authors strongly preferred).
- Demonstrated grant and proposal writing skills.
- Valid US driver’s license and the ability to occasionally work outdoors in remote locations.
