BBC MEDIA ACTION
BBC Media Action uses media and communications to reduce poverty and suffering in developing countries. To achieve this, BBC Media Action partners with civil society, local media and governments to:
• Produce creative programmes in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key development issues.
• Strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure.

JOB PURPOSE
Reporting to the Project Director, the Radio Production Mentor will be responsible for the capacity building of our media partner stations in South West State to broadcast programmes on Justice and Security to communities in the state. The post holder will develop a detailed training plan, working with colleagues in research department to use the insights from research into training needs, and expertise on best practice in building the capacity of the selected local radio outlets. The Radio Production Mentor will implement that plan, using his or her own expertise and the skills in providing training and mentoring to partner radio stations in South West state of Somalia.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Identify and assess training needs of partner stations and propose efficient interventions that mentors and improves their abilities.
• Devise an overall or individualized training and development tool and plan that addresses needs and expectations for each radio station partner.
• Design and deliver capacity strengthening programme for the local partner stations in South West State, Somalia.
• Provide regular on the job mentoring to the selected local partner stations to ensure they can produce high-quality content as per the need of the audiences of the project.
• Monitor the training programme’s effectiveness and successes regularly, and report regularly on activities and impact.
• The Production Mentor will work with partner radio stations producers to develop their creative skills and help them to produce high-quality radio content that engages and informs

listeners. This radio programming will be based on the communications objectives of the project.
• Maintain a keen awareness of developments in multimedia content production and training.
• Resolve any specific problems and tailor programmes, as necessary.
• Deploy a wide variety of training methods.
• Produce quarterly mentoring reports using the agreed template and time line.
• Complete all mandatory BBC Media Action training including Respect at Work and Safeguarding.
• Ensure that all production activities are designed with safeguarding in mind, and that production risk assessments reflect this.
• Ensure that relevant consent forms are in place.
• Report any safeguarding concerns immediately, either to the Country Director, or using the Whistleblowing Policy.
• Other tasks or responsibilities, as directed by the Project Director.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATION REQUIRED

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as journalism, development studies, development communications, project/business management etc.
• An impressive track-record in an editorial role as a editor, producer or journalist.
• At least 5 years of media training experience and at least 8 years of experience in journalism.
• Proven experience of and enthusiasm for training and mentoring.
• Experience of leading, managing and inspiring a team in a media and communication environment sitting.
• Demonstrable creative ability, with a proven track-record in coming up with innovative ideas for training and content creation.
• Familiarity with a wide range training method (mentoring, coaching, on-the-job, in classroom training, e-learning, workshops, simulations etc.)
• Fluent Somali (Maay) written and spoken language skills.
• Very good written and spoken English language skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to plan, multi-task and manage time effectively.
• Strong report writing and record keeping ability.
• Good IT and database skills, including experience of audio editing software and Microsoft Office.
• Experience of working with a national or international NGO on communications and media development is a desirable advantage.
