Under direct supervision, incumbent will use professional engineering concepts in performing entry level mechanical, engineering tasks associated with the design, analysis, development, fabrication, testing, data gathering, and assembly of carbon capture and electrical and mechanical energy storage systems, demonstrations, and experiments at UC San Diego. Incumbent will be expected to perform engineering technician tasks such as equipment repairs, maintenance, and installation support. Works on assignments that are initially routine in nature, requiring limited judgment and decision making.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical engineering or similar, or equivalent engineering work experience.

  • Basic knowledge of engineering principles and methods to perform entry-level professional engineering functions. Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or similar, or equivalent engineering work experience.

  • Knowledge of the fundamental concepts of the field. General knowledge in design, manufacturing, fabrication, assembly, and maintenance of electrical and mechanical systems pertaining to carbon capture and energy storage operations.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills. Strong communication skills needed to interact professionally and effectively with scientific, technical, and administrative staff.

  • Analytical and judgment skills to conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations. Ability to perform analysis or use good judgement in recognizing possible problems during design cycle. Ability to quickly solve these problems or provide recommendations of possible better solutions.

  • Ability to work in a collaborative manner.

  • Ability to use soldering equipment and power tools.

  • Experience with CAD and analysis packages.

  • Familiarity with basic digital and analog control circuits.

  • Basic knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals.

  • Analytical skills, and strong skills in attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to produce professional mechanical engineering production drawings.

PREFERRED:

  • Experience in diagnosing, repairing, and testing of electrical-mechanical equipment.

  • Experience and knowledge in working with high voltage circuits.

  • Occasional local travel to local collaborating sites will be required.

  • Job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on Background Check results.

  • This position is eligible for a Hybrid flexible work arrangement, which could include a non-standard work schedule, and/or the ability to work off-site part of the time.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $61,800 – $108,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $29.60 – $51.72

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
