The United Nations Secretariat, Agencies, Funds and Programmes based in Kenya is recruiting the following position to fill and populate the UN Kenya Common Roster for Kenya-based UN Offices for General Service and National Officer positions. Under the overall guidance of the Head of the specific Agency/Organization, this post may report to Senior Communications Assistant/ Associate or the designated supervisor of the respective entity. Within delegated authority, the Communications Assistant/Associate works in close collaboration with staff in the respective office and other UN offices to ensure consistent service delivery. The Communications Assistant will perform the following:
Responsibilities
• Perform specialised communications processes and activities, to support staff in the development, preparation, execution and dissemination of campaigns for target audiences. • Conduct research, suggest ideas, and provide coordination support to ensure the timely and effective delivery of video/film, photographic and radio projects. Manage the storage and distribution of audio/visual materials in accordance with relevant policies. • Serve as an information focal point, support and/or coordinate media coverage of events to optimise publicity of organisation’s activities. • Organise and execute special events, working closely with colleagues, external partners and media, to ensure events are effectively scheduled, publicised and attended. • Monitor traditional and social media, and report relevant information to senior staff to inform the development and/or evaluation of communications activities and strategies. • Under guidance, prepare content for use on traditional and social media platforms and networks, and printed materials, to enhance coverage and support of organisation’s activities, ensuring consistency with corporate messages. • Distribute and promote communications guidelines for organisation staff to refer to when creating content. • Manage updates and further develop internal records and databases, ensuring information is accurate, organised and available for others to access. • Respond to specialised queries and requests for support, using initiative and following standard processes, to ensure timely and accurate resolution of all enquiries. • Maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders, in order to provide an aligned, coherent service, and to identify opportunities to collaborate/integrate processes and activities. • Implement improvements to communications methods and practices, to contribute to a better flow of information about the organisation’s work to the media and stakeholders. • Assist with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making. • Assist with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures. • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
Completion of secondary education or equivalent is required. Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, International Relations, Public Relations, or other relevant field.
Job – Specific Qualification
Relevant training in Communications or Public Relations is desirable.
Work Experience
A minimum of Six (6) years of progressive in Communication Management, Public Relations, Information Management, or related area is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to (4)years for candidates who possess a first level University degree. Experience working with Microsoft Office applications is required. Experience in using integrated information management systems such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system is desirable. Experience in website administration (content management system), social networks administration and research is desirable. One (1) year of work experience within the United Nations or similar international organization is desirable One (1) year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
Languages
For the post advertised, fluency in English required and Knowledge of a local language is an advantage. NOTE: ‘Fluency’ equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and ‘Knowledge of’ equals a rating of “confident” in two of the four areas.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include a substantive assessment, such as a written test, which will be followed by a competency-based interview by phone or teleconference.
