Recreation Technician

Job Summary  
Go Mt. Charleston recreation technician are responsible for engaging the visiting public to educate them about the protection of natural resources, recreation regulations and opportunities, current use restrictions and other US Forest Service goals. Recreation technicians check for compliance with regulations and reports violations to supervisor. Additionally, recreation technicians maintain recreation sites like trailheads and campgrounds. These duties include trash collection, restroom maintenance and cleaning, cleaning out grills and fire pits. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Engaging and Communicating with the public
  • Contribute to the daily operations and maintenance of the developed recreation facilities of the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area.
  • Engage with the public to discuss resource protection, sharing Leave No Trace principles and current use restrictions
  • Provide information about the US Forest Service, it’s mission and value
  • Provide visitors with information regarding recreational opportunities on the forest and other nearby public lands
  • Document program accomplishments, statistics, and support with photography
  • Document resource damage and report it to Forest Service staff

Requirements, Qualifications and Education 

  • Must have a driver’s license and pass a Federal Background check
  • Excellent verbal communication, and the ability to convey information clearly and effectively
  • Ability to communicate with the general public from diverse backgrounds and educational levels, ranging from young children to adults
  • Basic knowledge of forest ecology and outdoor ethics
  • Multi-lingual speaker a plus
  • Good physical condition required. Ability to lift and maneuver supplies up to 50 pounds, extensive walking, bending and kneeling.
  • Familiarity with driving on minimally maintained dirt roads and driving in adverse all-season weather conditions
