This is an opportunity to gain valuable working knowledge and field experience in fisheries.
In this role, collect and summarize data to support the monitoring of freshwater recreational fisheries for salmon and steelhead by engaging with the public through creel surveys and documenting biological data.
What to Expect-
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Recreational Creel Technician will,
Collect freshwater recreational fisheries data for salmon and steelhead to monitor catch, species composition, and marked/unmark encounter rates for salmon and steelhead:
Operate and maintain assigned field equipment, vehicles, and other gear:
Working Conditions:
Work setting, including hazards: The primary work environment occurs outdoors during all weather conditions. During recreational fishery monitoring: stand, walk, bend, traverse slippery boat ramps, riverine gravel bars and muddy forest trails. On-board commercial fishery monitoring: board gillnet boats from department boats or public boat launches and stand for long periods of time (up to 12 hours) observing the commercial fishery. Lift, handle, and manipulate fish up to 40 pounds and equipment up to and or greater than 40 pounds may be required. Safely using a serrated knife to remove fish snouts. Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations
Schedule: Monday – Sunday, and the selected workdays are variable. 10 hours a day, 40 hours per week depending on the length of daylight between 6:00 A.M. – 9:00 P.M. Includes weekday, weekend, and holidays and possible evening work. Hours over 40 per week accrues as compensation time.
Travel: Driving to boat ramps and river trail access locations within the Humptulips and Chehalis River Basins.
Tools and Equipment: Standard office equipment, iPads, coded wire tag (CWT) wand, serrated knife, hemostats/tweezers, measuring tape and vehicles.
Customer Interactions: Includes some interactions with angry, distraught, or frustrated public individuals.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.
OR
Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of laboratory of field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist or zoologist.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
Successful completion of agency training and/or certification for assigned watercraft is dependent on supervisory direction, position need and training availability
