What we are looking for

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is looking for an experienced, dynamic, and highly strategic individual to take up the exciting new role of Regional Communications and Media Adviser (RMCA)The postholder will be responsible for leading the Latin America Regional Office (LARO) with the development, coordination and effective delivery of media and communications products and activities that contribute to the regional advocacy priorities and strategy, and in alignment with the global advocacy strategy.

What you will do

  1. Support the regional office to provide increased internal and external visibility and profile for all countries, with a special focus on prioritised crises and thematic areas.
  2. Lead media and communications crisis management support for the regional office, including contingency planning and training in cooperation with the global Media and Advocacy Section (AMS).
  3. Lead evidence and programme based public advocacy and media work for the regional office including producing and disseminating press releases, statements and responding to media requests.
  4. Manage the LARO Twitter/X account.
  5. Ensure that the LARO is effectively utilising social media platform s and seeking new innovate ways to communicate to NRC’s different audiences..
  6. Work with the regional and country programme teams to develop a suite of external and donor facing materials including social media content and web articles.

What you will bring

  • Five years’ work experience as a media/communications adviser or journalist – preferably related to development/humanitarian crises/foreign affairs.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field, such as journalism or communication, or bachelor’s degree in other relevant fields such as international relations, development, human rights, combined with proven media experience.
  • A strong media nose and the ability to produce and edit proactive and reactive media products such as press releases in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to find new creative media angles and work cross functionally with staff and teams not familiar with media and communications work.
  • An understanding of the media landscape in Latin America and the ability to build/maintain a strong network of journalists.
  • Extensive experience and skill with content production: photography, videography and drafting of human-interest stories.
  • Ability to develop strong relationships internally with the country and head office teams and externally with media/comms counterparts at other humanitarian organisations.
  • A practical understanding of advocacy tools, tactics, and approaches with the ability to quickly identify possible media and communications products and engagements that will support identified advocacy objectives.
  • Experience working with data and evidence from NGO programming and develop advocacy, communications, and media products for a diverse range of audiences.
  • Experience and willingness to function as spokesperson in international and regional mediaoutlets covering regional humanitarian context in English and Spanish.
  • Graphic design skills highly desirable.
  • Proven ability in multimedia and story-gathering and digital communication.
  • Experience in producing social media content.
  • Field experience from complex emergencies is desirable.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish.

What we offer

  • Duty station: In one of NRC’s offices in the region (Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico). Must be a national of have the right to work in any of those countries.
  • Contract: national, 12 months, extendable
  • Travel: up to 40%
  • Salary/benefits: grade 9 on NRC’s salary scale, with accompanying terms and conditions for international contracts
