IFRC has launched an Emergency Appeal for Ukraine and impacted countries that is coordinated on a European regional level. ICRC, IFRC and numerous Partner National Societies are integrating their capacities to provide coordinated crisis response in Ukraine and the neighboring countries.  
 This position is part of the Regional Communications Team in efforts to profile IFRC and National Society achievements in and out of emergencies.

Job Purpose:
Under the supervision of the Regional Communications Manager, and in cooperation with the IFRC’s Communications Department in Geneva, the Regional Digital Media Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating digital content and media in the region, including knowing and following key digital trends, and actioning creative and compelling campaigns and content. The incumbent will oversee creative digital and traditional media approaches, campaigns, external partnerships, and content that helps position IFRC and National Societies as leading humanitarian responders. A strong focus of this role will be on priority humanitarian challenges facing the region, including the Ukraine conflict and the work in neighbouring countries, migration across Europe, climate change and health-related concerns. The role holder will also be responsible for managing and coordinating communications resources on the ground ensuring that regular and quality communications materials are produced and distributed to highlight the humanitarian situation, and response efforts by Red Cross Red Crescent with the support of IFRC. 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Drive the IFRC’s social media strategy with online communities across Europe and Central Asia:

  • With an eye for jumping on new trends, identify creative approaches to how IFRC in the region communicates. 
  • Be in charge of curating creative, sharable and compelling content for external platforms.
  • Set up the strategy for the IFRC in Europe and Central Asia for digital and traditional media platforms with the Regional Manager, working (with some direct/technical reporting lines) with a team of social media, media and content communicators both in Budapest and across the region.  
  • Help IFRC grow its online community, covering core humanitarian topics: health, migration, climate change and disaster preparedness and response.
  • Identify opportunities to engage Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies in global and regional campaigns and digital trends that showcase our critical work.

Foster and maintain relationships that help us expand and grow our audiences:

  • Create opportunities to engage with platforms and influencers: from Twitch to Snap, from YouTube to Spotify. 
  • Identify and build strong relationships and partnerships with online platforms, creative agencies, influencers, companies and other digital experts to innovate our communication approaches.
  • Provide technical social media and media training and support to leadership in the region on building their skills as spokespeople and representatives in public platforms and media channels. 
  • Ensure strong visibility in local and international media through proactive engagement with journalists, editors, opinion leaders. Act as a spokesperson when required. 
  • Monitor media and social media, anticipate, identify, and flag potential reputational issues, and work with leadership and regional communications colleagues to adopt and implement appropriate responses.

Provide communication support in emergencies and advocate on humanitarian issues:

  • Identify media and social media angles that advocate on behalf of the humanitarian needs for those impacted by emergencies and the work we are doing to support those who need it most.
  • Provide opportunities for local voices on regional and global platforms (media and digital media) so that their perspectives are shared with decision makers, donors, and other critical stakeholders. 
  • Work with the team on core communication milestones to optimize creative and engaging storytelling and reporting back to donors.
  • Work with humanitarian diplomacy to integrate advocacy messages, including from research pieces for public engagement.

Work with National Societies to demonstrate and position humanitarian collective impact in the region:

  • Identify opportunities for National Society capacity building, skill building and learning through innovative communication approaches.
  • Guide leadership and National Societies in tackling reputational risks on social media and media platforms. 
  • Ensure strong social media engagement through coordinating content and managing campaigns for the involved National Societies, IFRC Europe and other Movement actors on digital and traditional channels, this includes audio-visual and written content for various audiences and channels from field activities and technical sectors.

Education Preferred:

  • University Degree in Journalism, Communications, International Relations or similar

Experience Required:

  • At least 5 years of work experience in communications, journalism or similar field and experience managing a team.
  • Deep understanding of the digital campaigning space and led campaigns with a digital audience in mind.
  • Experience in working with the media.

Knowledge, Skills and Languages:

  • Creative with a strong understanding of social media culture
  • Proven experience in drafting people-centred communications content for a variety of communications channels in diverse contexts
  • Results-oriented with proven ability to prioritize and achieve results
  • Knowledge of the key digital current affairs and opportunities for humanitarian diplomacy and positioning humanitarian issues

Languages:

  • Fluent spoken and written English

Preferred:

  • Other spoken languages in Europe (Spanish, French, or others)
