About Us

The Red Lily Health Board Aboriginal Corporation (RLHB) is a regional health service that aims to empower Aboriginal people in the West Arnhem region, seeking to address health issues in the community with the long-term vision improving health outcomes by establishing a regional Aboriginal community-controlled model of service delivery.

Red Lily is looking for a Remote Area Nurse who is keen to work as part of a team in a dynamic cultural environment that adds interest and satisfaction to the important work that nurses already do. Cultural induction and awareness training is something that Red Lily provide to both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal health staff to ensure the best chance of success in improving health outcomes for West Arnhem communities.

About The Community

Minjilang is the name of the Aboriginal town on Croker Island, situated just to the east of Cobourg Peninsula, approximately 250km north-east of Darwin. Situated in the luminescent Arafura Sea, Croker Island is home to abundant wildlife and flora that inhabit the beaches, wetlands, swamps and native bushland. Approximately 265 people live on Croker Island, and many of the local people are multi-lingual and speak Iwaidja, Mawng, Kunwinjku, Kuninjku and English. There is year-round air access with Fly Tiwi running a daily passenger service to Darwin and weekly barge services from Darwin for freight.

Minjilang Health Centre is staffed by two RANs, Aboriginal Health Worker, with the support of community drivers and reception staff. The community is serviced by a range of outreach services with the GP visiting once a week. The Northern Territory Health Department Rural Medical Practitioners provide 24-hour Phone support, and in partnership with CareFlight coordinate 24-hour retrieval services.

  • Base Salary up to $122,824 + Super.
  • Attractive Annualised Salary* arrangements are available to approved applicants, up to $165,000.00 pa. (Annualised Salary calculations include base rate salary plus all award entitlements, travel allowances, projected overtime, on-call allowances, post-graduate allowances and other individual and negotiated benefits, subject to approval).
  • Penalty rates for Overtime and Call Outs + On Call Allowance.

Primary Objective

As a member of a multidisciplinary coordinate deliver primary health care services to community that includes treating emergency and acute presentations, coordinate client focused care planning, promote wellbeing, provide health education, and encourage community health action in order to contribute to better health outcomes for the people in West Arnhem.

Responsibilities

  • Provide & promote a comprehensive Primary Health Care (PHC) service utilising a multidisciplinary approach and endorsed protocols (e.g. CARPA manuals) and policies. 
  • Ensure all documentation, records and health information systems are maintained to ensure continuity of care.  
  • Facilitate and provide culturally acceptable health education supporting a community participative approach to local level decision-making. 
  • Promote and support Aboriginal Health Practitioners (AHPs) to be first line providers of health care in the community to facilitate the delivery of culturally appropriate health care. 
  • Participate in and encourage education and professional development of self, team members and learners. 
  • Participate in Quality and Safety programs including development and evaluation of policies, procedures, and protocols (including Work Health & Safety). 
  • Participate in performance management and professional development programs in consultation with management and professional support groups.
  • Participate in the orientation of new staff to the Organisation’s philosophy, policies and procedures and Health Centre functions to promote effective teamwork.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and review of the Organisational plan.
  • Participate in an on call 24-hour roster. 

Key Selection Criteria

  • AHPRA Registration and relevant post basic qualifications.
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated skills in Remote Area Nursing with an understanding of all roles within a multidisciplinary primary health care team model in Australian indigenous communities.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in the management of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Highly developed interpersonal, complex problem solving, written, verbal and IT communication skills with willingness to use health IT systems. 
  • Experience or willing to obtain training in the PCIS health system (Primary Care Info System). 
  • Knowledge and experience in implementation of Primary Health Care programs and relevant legislation governing work practice in the remote setting.
  • Full Australian Working Rights.
  • Manual drivers’ license.
  • National Police Clearance (within 6 months, check done through Safe NT).
  • Valid Working with Children Card (OCHRE card).
  • Willing to apply for Land Council work Permit.
  • Able and willing to travel by small light aircrafts and 4WD to remote communities.
  • Willing to participate in an on call 24-hour roster.

Desirable skills

  • Appropriate tertiary and/or post -basic qualifications such as Midwifery, Child Health, Emergency Care, Mental Health, and/or Primary Health Care.
