This permanent, full-time position located in Charleston, Oregon.

Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon’s fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.

As a Supervising Fish and Wildlife Biologist in Charleston, Oregon, you will direct and implement all fish management activities within the Coos/Coquille/Tenmile Fish District in ODFW’s Umpqua Watershed District. The fish district manages fish stocks and protects and restores habitat in service of ODFW’s mission.  Specific direction and policy for these programs comes from the Fish and Wildlife Commission, the Fish and Habitat Divisions, the West Region Manager, and the Umpqua Watershed Manager. Duties include:

• Supervision of district fisheries staff
• Establishment and maintenance of partnerships with Tribal governments, local conservation and recreation organizations, federal, state, and local governments, and various other entities
• Coordination and oversight of District fisheries management activities, including volunteer activities, habitat protection and restoration, inventory of habitat and fisheries resources, and hatchery activities
• Development and maintenance of strong public relations

This position requires a Hazardous Waste Operations Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training certification and All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card be obtained within six months of hire.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Minimum Qualifications

Three years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program. At least one year of the experience must be at a technical or professional level performing activities in a fish or wildlife program such as researching and analyzing data, conducting investigations, applying pertinent laws and regulations, or coordinating and monitoring project activities; AND  A Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Bachelor’s degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework,

-OR–

three additional years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fisheries or wildlife program. 

One year of experience must have included leadwork or supervisory duties.

Equivalency Notes:

• A Master’s degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Master’s degree in biological/ecological sciences will substitute for up to one year of the required experience.
• A Doctorate degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Doctorate degree in biological/ecological sciences will substitute for up to two years of the required experience.

• Excellent communication skills. Ability to clearly convey plans, expectations, and relevant information to staff. Ability to communicate on behalf of ODFW with partners and the public
• Demonstrates a strong commitment, interest, and desire to serve the working relationship with Oregon’s federally recognized Tribes.  Provides leadership and fosters positive working relationships with tribal partners, including a variety of activities, agreements, contracts, and shared commitments/goals
• Experience in maintaining consistent communication with partners, including, but not limited to Tribes, BLM, USFS, NOAA Fisheries, USFWS, state agencies, local governments, watershed councils, and volunteer and STEP groups
• Skilled at working with the public, legislators and state, federal, and tribal agencies using persuasive diplomacy to coordinate activities and resolve conflicts. Must display a good sense of professionalism when dealing with the public and volunteers and represent the Agency positively
• Knowledge and working experience in fisheries biology; particularly hatchery management, harvest management, and habitat restoration and protection.
• Experience with various communication media and approaches to sharing information to the public
• Experience developing presentations and presenting and speaking to groups.
• Knowledge of databases, database programs, and mapping skills
• Experience working on agency committees to develop staff proposals or agency positions
• Experience performing data analysis using a variety of statistical tools
• Experience developing and implementing project proposals, monitoring budgets and tracking expenditures
