General Notes
The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences in the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Austin seeks a geoscientist to work in the High-Resolution X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) Facility (UTCT). The lab is an NSF-supported Community Facility, and a NASA Planetary Science Enabling Facility, that serves an extremely varied research community, across many geoscience disciplines (including igneous and metamorphic petrology, paleontology, hydrogeology, meteoritics, structural geology, sedimentary geology, and economic geology), and other science and engineering fields as well. This scientist will join a team of researchers at the facility and will participate in maintaining it at full functionality, perform data acquisition and analysis for facility clients, develop and improve routines for tomographic data acquisition and analysis, and train new users. The laboratory consists of a custom-built NSI industrial CT scanner and a Zeiss Xradia 620 Versa CT scanner, and an image processing facility with workstations and commercial and facility-written software for data processing, visualization, and analysis.
Purpose
This scientist will join a team of researchers at the facility and will participate in maintaining it at full functionality, perform data acquisition and analysis for facility clients, develop and improve routines for tomographic data acquisition and analysis, and train new users
Responsibilities
-
Conduct outreach and teaching, including leading lab tours, teaching short courses, training personnel in scanner operation, and presenting at professional meetings.

Conduct CT-related research.

Interact with investigators, including communication on scanning projects, hosting, client image processing, and collaborative research.

Operate and maintain CT scanner, including sample preparation, scanning, routine maintenance, system calibration, and troubleshooting.
Required Qualifications
Master of Science degree in geological sciences, geophysics, or engineering, and two years of experience in acquisition and/or research utilization of CT or similar volumetric data.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. in geology or geophysics, experience in operation of CT instrumentation and CT data processing, and a strong computational background. The option to pursue independent funding and engage in independent research is open and negotiable.
Salary Range
$71,000 + depending on qualifications
