Position Summary

Performs professional support to the College of Veterinary Medicine research enterprise by providing assistance with preparation of necessary grant proposal forms and documents; This position will also handle post award issues relating to endowments and other institutional and training grants and on occasion for research, federal and other grants.  Duties as follows.

Pre-Award Administration:

  • Provides independent professional support to the pre-award administration office in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM).
  • Performs as a liaison between CVM faculty and the MSU Office of Sponsored Programs; MSU IACUC office
  • Assists college to develop and implement research administration policies and procedures
  • Assists faculty and departmental staff in all aspects of preparation of applications for internal and external research funding and related scholarly activities, including identification of potential sponsors and new funding opportunities; preparation and review of proposal budgets and narratives; preparation of research-related data, and oversight of all non-scientific aspects of grant proposals and manage funded ERF’s.
  • Reviews and approves grant application materials and proposals to ensure compliance with sponsoring agency regulations and University policies and procedures
  • Generates reports related to CVM research funding activities
  • Works with faculty and administrators of CVM to coordinate the administrative components of collaborative research opportunities across MSU and with external partners
  • Coordinates with faculty, administrators, other university staff and departments, and external collaborators to achieve the most effective way of submitting quality proposals that are timely and compliant
  • Coordinates facilities and administrative costs, co-investigator agreements, and sub-recipient coordination
  • Maintains CVM PI research space profiles in Kuali Research System
  • Develops and presents research administration-related presentations for new CVM faculty and staff
  • Participates in the research Administrators network at MSU and performs other duties as assigned

CVM Endowments’ Grant Administration:

  • Manages the CVM endowment grant application process
  • Solicitation/competition announcement
  • Grant application reviews
  • Coordination with CVM Endowed Research grants committee, applicants and grant reviewers
  • Coordinates IACUC/IRB process for the grants
  • Coordinates grant account setup
  • Coordinates progress and final report submissions as well as no cost extensions

Research Administration: Duties that provide other supportive processes, such as coordination and communication with involved regulatory and administrative departments/units (CVM VMC and VDL, OSP, CGA, IACUC, MSUT)

Post-Award Administration:

  • Perform as a liaison between CVM faculty and the MSU contracts and Grants office, and ensures timely award revisions; contract execution, account setup and activation
  • Aids operations as it applies to organization of research forums (Molecules to Medicine, Phi Zeta day, research seminar series, etc.) and in the college.

Research Compliance:

  • Provides guidance and assistance to new PIs and related staff on grant submissions, research processes and required grant submission paperwork
  • Conducts review of grant applications for compliance with regulations
  • Assists other research administrators and project staff in ensuring compliance with research guidelines and requirements of regulatory agencies, identifies problems and/or inconsistencies and recommends corrective actions to department project personnel as appropriate.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Business administration, Finance, or a research-related field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in research administration including the area of pre- or post-award processes, or related field such as regulatory administration; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This job requires completion of Essentials of Research Administration (MSU Certificate) or equivalent within one year of hire. 

Desired Qualifications

Excellent organization and verbal and communication skills; experience working with diverse populations; must be able to produce quality work under pressure in a deadline driven environment; ability to manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines is also essential; ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships with faculty and colleagues at the office of Sponsored Programs and Contract and grant administration; demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, Adobe Creative Suite, Slidewrite, Endnote, and Reference Manager
