Organisation Background

Founded in 2011, the International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO) is an international non-governmental organisation that supports humanitarian aid workers by establishing safety coordination platforms in insecure contexts. INSO provides registered NGOs with a range of free services, including real-time incident tracking, analytical reports, safety-related data and mapping, crisis management support, staff orientations and training.

INSO provides daily support to more than 1,200 NGOs operating in 17 of the world’s most insecure countries. INSO is registered in the Netherlands, with its headquarters based in The Hague, the international city of peace and justice.

Job Summary

As a Research Analyst, you will help address the safety and access analysis needs of NGO HQs through scheduled and tailored reports, consistent engagement and thematic research. You will accomplish this objective primarily by assessing and advising on challenges related to humanitarian safety and access leveraging engagement with INSO’s in-country teams, operational NGO partners and the Conflict & Humanitarian Data Centre.

Major Responsibilities

  • Develop, write and publish INSO’s NGO Incidents Overview, our global monthly report that assesses NGO incident trends across INSO’s country platforms.
  • Develop, write and publish the Safety and Access Review, our global quarterly report examining the correlation of conflict activity and NGO incidents.
  • Deliver briefs and tailored analysis products addressing emerging dynamics or cross-contextual challenges related to humanitarian safety and access.
  • Contribute to comparative analysis of NGO-specific risks through benchmark dashboards and briefs provided directly to NGOs.
  • Contribute to thematic reports on cross-contextual or structural issues relevant to NGO safety and access.
  • Contribute to research projects that aim to use INSO’s field data and access in addressing prevalent and recurring risks to humanitarian programming.
  • Assist the Deputy Director in the development and application of the department’s internal processes, product guidelines and operating procedures.
  • Liaise and coordinate with INSO’s Regional Analysts regarding contributions to global reports, thematic papers and analytical training.
  • Identify and cultivate a network of contacts within the broader humanitarian community and beyond to expand INSO’s global visibility, membership, exchanges and coordination.
  • Track and report on existing or emerging humanitarian crises.
  • Ensure and reinforce the continuity and consistency between INSO’s consolidated internal data and externally distributed analytical products on a global level.

Mandatory Requirements

  • Fluency in English (required) and French (desired)
  • Masters degree in International Relations/ Political Science, Security/ Conflict Studies, Humanitarian Action/ Humanitarianism, International Humanitarian Law or Journalism.
  • Relevant experience working in NGOs, international organisations, the military, research bodies or journalism.
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrable understanding of safety discourses and dynamics as they relate to the humanitarian infrastructure, NGO operations and coordination mechanisms.
  • Must have the right to live and work in the Netherlands.

Desirable

  • Strong comprehension and training in conflict analysis, conflict sensitivity and/or do no harm.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively to meet tight deadlines.
  • 3 years’ experience working in and on insecure/post-conflict environments, preferably in an analytical capacity.
  • Pre-existing field experience, contextual knowledge and/or information networks from working in the humanitarian field or in a related area.
  • Experience engaging and coordinating efforts across multiple levels of NGO hierarchy (field, national, regional and HQ)
  • A firm understanding of relevant narratives and complementary sources within and beyond the humanitarian community.
  • Strategic commitment to innovatively incorporate and systematise analytical thinking into humanitarian projects, operations and programmes.
  • Technical proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Power BI.

Terms & Conditions:

12-month full-time fixed-term contract (renewable based on funding) based in The Hague, Netherlands. It is a Dutch contract based on the Dutch social security and taxation rules with a €5,200 per month gross salary + 8% vacation pay (vakantiegeld) and 2.5 days annual leave accrued per month. We provide Basic Premium ONVZ health insurance in the Netherlands and travel insurance when travelling for work. A relocation allowance is available. The right to live and work in the Netherlands is required for this position.
