Mission and objectives

UN Women is the United Nations entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide.
UN Women supports UN Member States as they set global standards for achieving gender equality, and works with governments and civil society to design laws, policies, programmes and services needed to ensure that the standards are effectively implemented and truly benefit women and girls worldwide. It works globally to make the vision of the Sustainable Development Goals a reality for women and girls and stands behind women’s equal participation in all aspects of life, focusing on four strategic priorities:
– Women lead, participate in and benefit equally from governance systems
– Women have income security, decent work and economic autonomy
– All women and girls live a life free from all forms of violence
– Women and girls contribute to and have greater influence in building sustainable peace and resilience, and benefit equally from the prevention of natural disasters and conflicts and humanitarian action
UN Women also coordinates and promotes the UN system’s work in advancing gender equality, and in all deliberations and agreements linked to the 2030 Agenda. The entity works to position gender equality as fundamental to the Sustainable Development Goals, and a more inclusive world.

Context

In December 2006, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted a comprehensive resolution calling for intensification of efforts to eliminate all forms of violence against women and requesting the Secretary-General to establish a coordinated database on the extent, nature and consequences of all forms of violence against women, and on the impact and effectiveness of policies and programs for eliminating such violence. The database was developed and launched in 2009 and subsequently re-launched in 2016, in accordance with the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as the “Global Database on Violence against Women” (https://data.unwomen.org/evaw/database). UN Women is currently in the process of redesigning, updating and re-launching the database, to allow users to more easily navigate through its extensive content; UN Women serves as the secretariat for the database.
The Database is designed to:
– Provide easy access to comprehensive and up-to-date information on measures undertaken by Governments to address different forms of violence against women.
-Increase opportunities for exchange of experiences in addressing violence against women.
-Strengthen the knowledge-base for effective policy responses to prevent and address violence against women.
-Encourage the further collection, availability, use and dissemination of data on violence against women, as well as analysis of such data.
The database includes a section on Country Profiles: each country profile provides a snapshot of available prevalence data on different forms of violence against women, reports submitted by the UN Human Rights bodies, and the availability of a selection of key measures providing a quick assessment of the comprehensiveness of national responses. Country profiles also provide access to all the measures adopted by the selected country.

Task description

The Ending Violence against Women Section in the Policy Division at UN Women Headquarters is looking for Online Volunteers to conduct desk-based research to identify and add new and missing data and information to complete the ‘country profiles’ section of the Global Database on Violence against Women (https://data.unwomen.org/evaw/database). The task will include conducting research on specific indicators related to violence against women and compiling information in an internal database.
Each Online Volunteer will be assigned with a list of specific countries to conduct research on and finalize the country profile information, based on language spoken and interest by the selected candidates.
An initial orientation session will be organized to train and guide Online Volunteer through the information collection process and data and information entry, and ongoing support will be provided throughout the assignment, also allowing for the various Online Volunteers under this task to exchange about the process and support each other.
