Duties and Responsibilities
Background information The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. The External Relations, Strategy, Knowledge and Innovation Division is responsible for strategic planning, programmatic direction, and operationalization of UN-Habitat’s role for the New Urban Agenda, and 2030 Agenda. ERSKID is also leading the preparation of the World Urban Forum, established in 2001 to address one of the most pressing issues facing the world today: rapid urbanization and its impact on communities, cities, economies, climate change and policies. Convened by UN-Habitat, the Forum is a high level, open and inclusive platform for addressing the challenges of sustainable urbanization. The World Urban Forum has three main objectives. First to raise awareness of sustainable urbanization among stakeholders and constituencies, including the general public. Second, to improve collective knowledge on sustainable urban development through open and inclusive debate, exchange of best practices and policies, and sharing of lessons learnt. Third, to promote collaboration and cooperation between different stakeholders and constituencies engaged in the advancement and implementation of sustainable urbanization. The next session (12th) is which is taking place 4-8 November in Cairo (and targets to gather around 20,000 urban stakeholders, including Ministers and Heads of States. Under the supervision of the ERSKID Director, the consultant is expected to provide substantive, operational and coordination for WUF 12 through urban research and analytics for substantive preparations and coordination. Duties and responsibilities The consultant will work under the overall guidance of the Director of ERSKID, and will be responsible for the following duties: 1. Technical support and inputs to the internal WUF Task Force headed by the Executive Director and constituted of all UN-Habitat Divisions 2. Research and drafting of background papers on selected themes of the WUF including on housing, smart cities and climate change 3. Compilation and analytics of data in support of the preparation of substantive sessions at WUF12 4. Substantive and coordination support for the organization of the main Dialogue session of the WUF overseen by the Director of ERSKID 5. Coordination support with relevant partners and stakeholders for the organization of WUF 6. Substantive organization and coordination of the launch of the World Cities Report at WUF 7. Coordination and substantive support on ERSKID’s engagement with the Office of the Executive Director on WUF 12 8. Substantive inputs on other corporate processes related to WUF including UN-Habitat’s Strategic Plan 2026-2029; Summit of the Future and UN-Habitat’s intergovernmental bodies 9. Substantive support for the impact strategy and monitoring of WUF 12 before, during and after the session 10. Substantive support and coordination towards the preparations of WUF 13 in Baku, Azerbaijan
Qualifications/special skills
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in business administration, public administration, economics, urban planning, social science or a related field is required. A first university degree with a combination of two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Five years of varied experiences with international organizations and/or significant previous background in institutional environment of development cooperation (NGOs, UN system, multilateral cooperation, etc.) is required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of one or more official languages will be an advantage.
