Working for the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering 

The Reservoir Geomechanics Research Group – known as [RG]2 –  is a large Geotechnical research group working in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta. Using cutting-edge technology and software in our unique GeoInnovation Environments, our team carries out research on subjects including Carbon Capture and Storage, Oil Sands Tailing Management and Reclamation, Subsurface Assurance, and more.

Position Summary

The responsibilities of the successful candidate for the ACTiON Project include assisting with the development of methods and approaches to the design and implementation of machine learning models, coupling of reservoir and geomechanical models, conducting in-depth analyses and providing progress reports, and addressing or reporting any issues with methodologies and timelines that become apparent as the project progresses. Emphasis is placed on encouraging members of [RG]2 to showcase and hone existing skills while developing new research, professional, and interpersonal capacities. This is accomplished by providing opportunities for each individual to work in both support and leadership roles within the team through ongoing communication, participation, and collaboration.

Duties

  • Proper management of multiple realizations of multiphase flow models (e.g. CCUS)
  • Updates to Geocellular and flow models
  • Creation of technical reports
  • Presentation of interim progress reports
  • Preparation of final results

Minimum Qualifications

  • Extensive experience with reservoir simulation software and skills using CMG Schlumberger Suite and TOUGH is mandatory
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously while adhering to strict, tight deadlines
  • Strong written and oral communication in English is essential
  • Demonstrated excellence in creating technical reports
  • MSc/MEng in Petroleum Engineering
  • Two or more years of relevant research experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exemplary professional and interpersonal integrity that aligns with the QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety, and Environmental) and EDI (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusivity) expectations of the group
  • Previous experience working in an academic institution, with preference given to those candidates with University of Alberta experience
