The University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Neurobiology is currently recruiting for a Contractual Research Assistant.  The position will perform biomedical research in the laboratory of Dr. Michy Kelly in the Department of Neurobiology.  The Research Assistant will conduct experiments in cell culture using molecular, pharmacological, and biochemical techniques to study age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease. Occasional weekend or holiday work will be required. Please include a cover letter with your application.

Primary Duties:

  • Perform routine laboratory maintenance and research activities such as: performing cell culture experiments that examine the effect of recombinant DNA and/or pharmacological tools; executing molecular/biochemical analyses using techniques such as Western blotting, enzyme assays, microscopy, etc.; tissue processing (e.g., cryosectioning, homogenizing, etc.).
  • Compile and may analyze research data using various relevant computer software applications.
  • Perform administrative duties such as: training and guiding students and/or other laboratory technicians; ordering supplies, maintaining lab stockpiles (e.g., buffers), keeping the laboratory environment orderly and clean.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in neuroscience, biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, biomedical sciences, or a related field or discipline.

Preferred Experience: One (1) year of laboratory research experience. Cell culture experience.

Other: May consider a combination of directly related experience and education. May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.

Hiring Range: $45,000 – $48,000 (Commensurate with education and experience)
