Job Description:

The Research Assistant will assist with experiments to examine the cellular processes by which specific genetic variants modify neurodegeneration phenotypes associated with ALS. The Research Assistant will use genetic, cell biological and molecular techniques to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying genetic suppression of locomotor and neuronal defects apparent in the disease state. This research will make use of Drosophila as a model system. In addition to assisting with specific experiments that involve genetic crosses, tissue dissections, immunohistochemistry, imaging, molecular techniques and biochemical assays, the research assistant will also help perform -omic analyses. The Research Assistant will also engage in and assist with general lab support duties.
This is a fixed term position with a current end date of 07/30/2025 which may be extended based upon available funding.

Job Qualifications

Education and Experience (Grade 7)

  • Required: Bachelor degree in biology, genetics, neuroscience, biochemistry, or related field.
  • Previous research experience working in a laboratory setting is preferred.
  • Relevant coursework and knowledge of laboratory approaches and techniques in the areas of Genetics, Molecular, Cell Biology and Biochemistry is preferred.
  • Or, equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong computer skills with experience using graphing, image and statistical analysis programs.
  • Experience using Drosophila as a research organism preferred.

Education and Experience (Grade 8)

  • Required: Bachelor degree in biology, genetics, neuroscience, biochemistry, or related field and 1-2 years’ research experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Relevant coursework and knowledge of laboratory approaches and techniques in the areas of Genetics, Molecular, Cell Biology and Biochemistry is preferred.
  • Or, equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong computer skills with preferably some experience using graphing, image and statistical analysis programs.
  • Experience using Drosophila as a research organism is preferred.

  • Conceptually comfortable with genetic and molecular genetic approaches
  • Experience working with Drosophila is required
