This position is expected to continue as long as start-up funds or grant funds are available to support the position.
Purpose
Under supervision of the study coordinator, the Research Assistant (RA) supports a faculty member in the Department of Population Health in carrying out her research agenda regarding asthma, allergies, and environmental health. The range of duties includes, but is not limited to: study participant recruitment/interviews, data collection, data entry, organizing collected information, records management, and communicating with team members on the status of project(s).
Responsibilities
At the direction of the research coordinator, provides day-to-day project assistance with faculty research studies. Screens, recruits, and conducts the informed consent process with eligible research participants and tracks participation over time. Reviews health information from participants’ electronic medical records to screen for eligibility.
Acts as primary contact for study participants, including scheduling and confirming appointments. Either remotely or in person (following COVID-19 safety protocols) Conducts study visits, participant interviews, and measurements in clinic visits and participants’ homes.
Develops and provides, with supervision from research coordinator, participant educational materials. Collects clinical data and samples such as lung function testing, lung inflammation testing, blood collection, allergy testing, height and weight. Conducts home visits and collects environmental samples such as vacuumed dust and airborne dust. Maintains study databases and ensures data is complete and accurate.
Uses a variety of software and database technologies, including RedCap, Excel, and other software and databases to enter data and track study activities. Enters all required study data on an ongoing basis. Participates in weekly study team meetings and regular trainings and in-services with the study team.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree. Demonstrated organizational skills. Experience working in a medical or scientific research setting, or comparable health-or social services-oriented organization. Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to discuss personal topics with research participants in a compassionate, sensitive manner with an understanding of the ethical as well as HIPAA requirements. Demonstrated detail orientation, ability to follow-through, and strong problem-solving skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word and willingness to learn other technologies as necessary. Ability to work independently and on a team. Access to a car for traveling to locations on/off campus including participant homes and partner organization health clinics. Outgoing and engaging personality, comfortable interacting one-on-one with populations of study participants. Finalist is required to complete Ascension Seton Research Affiliate application and UT Health Worklife Screening process, part of this involves proof of and/or completion of immunizations for our affiliates approval. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications
Phlebotomy skills. Fluent in Spanish.
Salary Range
$35,000 + depending on qualifications
