The University of Nottingham School of Law would like to recruit a research assistant to work with Dr Oliver Butler (as Principal Investigator) on the Faculty of Social Sciences Knowledge Exchange and Impact project “Co-producing Public Automated Decision-Making”.

When automated decision-making technologies (ADM) are procured and used by public authorities, important design and implementation decisions are often delegated to the professional developers they sub-contract to co-produce such technology. This can undermine accountability, democratic oversight, and the allocation of public functions determined by Parliaments. On the other hand, in some circumstances officials might appropriately defer to the expertise of developers. The project aims to engage in knowledge exchange with legal and policy professionals and with developers of such technologies to explore ways in which accountable official decision-making can be appropriately retained where ADM is co-produced for public purposes.

A research assistant is needed to attend three two-day visits to London for stakeholder meetings and workshops, and to assist in the preparation of a policy paper presenting the PI’s research and reporting the outcomes of stakeholder workshops.

This post is available on a fixed term, part-time (3.63 hours per week) basis until 31/07/2024. The post is funded at 10% FTE, which is approximately half a day per week. However, there will be weeks when the research assistant is expected to work one or two full days (e.g. stakeholder meetings and workshops).

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Agnes Flues, [email protected]. Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
