Research Assistant- Microbial Ecology and Carbon Degradation

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Climate & Ecosystems Division has an opening for a Research Assistant to join the team.

 

In this exciting role, you will conduct research on projects developing enrichments and isolates that are capable of degrading recalcitrant carbon under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. You will assist in design and will execute enrichments with different recalcitrant carbon including TNT, analogues and degradation intermediates; monitor growth and assay for specific metabolites; and use DNA-based methods to identify communities and isolates.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Process soil and sediment samples in the laboratory for microbial, chemical and DNA-based analysis.
  • Develop enrichments and metabolic assays with related chemical stocks and media preparation. 
  • Monitoring microbial growth and depletion of carbon and other metabolites.
  • Perform isolations and curate freezer stocks of isolates
  • Communicate and share results and data on shared systems.
  • Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook of all work performed.
  • Maintain standards of cleanliness of the work area and a safe and productive work area for research, and contribute to overall Lab safety, cleanliness and organization

 

What is Required:

  • Experience in enrichment of soil and sediment microbes.
  • Experience in performing assays to characterize microbial metabolites.
  • Working knowledge of Excel, and basic statistics.
  • Attention to detail in microbiological methods
  • Ability to demonstrate persistent effort of work (e.g. determination). 
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Microbial Biology preferred.

  • This is a full time, non-exempt from overtime pay (hourly paid), 1 year (benefits eligible), term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • This position is expected to pay $21.79 – $26.75 per hour which fits within the full salary range of $21.79 – $31.69 per hour for job code 588.1. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group. 
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
