Department of Physics – Institute of Experimental Physics
Research assistant (praedoc) (m/f/d)
with 75 %part-time job
salary grade (Entgeltgruppe) 13 TV-L FU
reference code: PhyKu_01/24
The position is assigned to the workgroup of Prof. W. Kuch, which has experience investigating ultrathin magnetic films, surfaces, adsorbed molecules, and nanostructures that may become relevant in a future spin-based electronics. A focus is on ultrafast spin dynamics. Experiments are carried out both by laboratory-based techniques as well as by using synchrotron radiation.
Job description:
The project consists of research in the field of x-ray spectroscopy of two-dimensional magnetic materials. The goal is the characterisation of these materials in the few- or single-monolayer limit and their controlled manipulation by external parameters such as the interaction with a substrate or adsorbed molecules. These materials are interesting with respect to their use as programmable building blocks of a future spin electronics. Following deposition in ultra-high vacuum, they are characterised by surface-science techniques and x-ray photoemission as well as x-ray absorption spectroscopy. An important aspect is also their ultrafast spin dynamics. Experiments will be carried out in the university laboratory in Berlin-Dahlem and at the synchrotron radiation source BESSY II in Berlin-Adlershof.
Requirements:
A master’s degree in physics is required.
Desirable:
A master’s thesis in experimental physics, experience in surface science, with ultrahigh vacuum technology, or with x-ray spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. Applications quoting the reference code PhyKu_01/24 *must* include a complete CV, an abstract (max. one page) of the master thesis, as well as names and addresses (postal and e-mail) of two or three persons willing to provide confidential letters of reference. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
For further information, please contact Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Kuch ([email protected] / +49 30 838 52098).
Applications should be sent by e-mail, together with significant documents, indicating the reference code, in PDF format (preferably as one document) no later than May 27th, 2024 to Christiane Cech: [email protected] or postal to
