This will be a 100% Research 12-month non-tenure position in the School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatics Sciences, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida. This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. Duties will include management of the breeding program deliverables, including breeding, genetic testing, and analytical support with the Cooperative Forest Genetics Research Program (CFGRP). In addition, the position requires development of 1) a funded research program on breeding and genetics, 2) disseminating findings to CFGRP members and 3) targeted outreach to landowners.

Background Information

The Cooperative Forest Genetics Research Program at the School of Forest, Fisheries and Geomatics Sciences, conducts research on breeding and genetics and coordinates applied breeding programs with loblolly and slash pine. Our goal is to develop germplasm suitable for commercial development an deployment in the lower coastal plain of the southeastern US.

The School of Natural Resources and Environment is an interdisciplinary unit housed in IFAS and managed by several colleges on campus.  UF/IFAS employs nearly 4,500 people, which includes approximately 990 salaried faculty and 1,400 permanent support personnel located in Gainesville and throughout the state. IFAS, one of the nation’s largest agricultural and natural resources research and education organizations, is administered by a Vice President and four deans: the Dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the Dean for Extension and Director of the Florida Cooperative Extension Service, the Dean for Research and Director of the Florida Agricultural Experiment Station, and the Dean for the College of Veterinary Medicine.  UF/IFAS also engages in cooperative work with Florida A&M University in Tallahassee.

Commensurate with Education and Experience

A PhD (foreign equivalent acceptable) in quantitative genetics and genomics or a closely related discipline with an emphasis on forest tree species. Experience with breeding of southern pines, and design and analysis of genetic tests, classical quantitative genetic and genomic analyses are required. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system.
