This position is located within a health-care facility, therefore, the successful candidate will be required to provide verification of full vaccination against Covid-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by a provincial health mandate.
Compensation Range at 0.4533 FTE:
$1,907.32 – $2,268.97 CAD Monthly

Research Assistant provides technical support to the scientific research team, planning and conducting research experiments, evaluating test results, creating customized reports and research records. Significant supervisory/project management duties frequently required at more senior levels.
Responsibilities
-Isolation of human monocytes from blood to differentiate into macrophages for Leishmania infection related studies.
-Maintain Leishmania promastigotes cultures in vitro and in amastigote forms in hamsters.
-Elects, develop and perform lab-based protocols related to various biochemical/cellular assays like western blots, RNA isolation, RT-PCR, affinity chromatography and confocal microscopy.
-Operates laboratory equipment and make sures that laboratory equipment is kept clean and in working order.
-monitors inventory of lab supplies and ensures proper storage of supplies.
– Provides training and supervision to undergraduate students in the use of techniques and complex procedures.
-Take all necessary safety training and necessary precautions when handling potentially hazardous material, chemicals and biological agents.
-Help PI in doing literature search and writing reports.
-Performs other related tasks as assigned.
Decision Making/Accountability: Wide latitude for exercising independent initiative and judgment in the performance of specialized duties and responsibilities.
Supervision Received: Works independently under administrative direction and following the mandate of the laboratory.
Supervision Exercised: May be required to provide direction and demonstrate techniques to undergraduate e students as required.
Consequences of Error/Judgement: Must be precision-oriented in designing and conducting research experiments keeping objectives in mind.

A MSc in Biochemistry/Immunology or an undergraduate with a minimum of 2 years of related experience will be required. Prior experience in the field of host-pathogen interactions (Leishmania -macrophage in particular) will be a plus. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills; and attention to detail. Must be able to work independently, exercising sound judgement and critical thinking to analyze problems, and suggest solutions.
