Offer Description
The University of British Columbia Department of Medicine, Division of Social Medicine, invites applications for a Research Associate to join a productive observational and experimental epidemiologic research program focusing on the therapeutic use of cannabis. The Research Associate posseses and applies highly advanced scientific knowledge of substance use and its comorbidities, in particular, substance use disorders and their treatments.
The minimum starting salary for this position is $90,000 per annum and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
- Demonstrate scientific knowledge and expertise in substance use and related co-morbidities, e.g., HIV disease, substance use disorders, chronic pain;
- Demonstrate scientific knowledge and expertise in investigating cannabis use in humans;
- Conceive, plan, organize, and carry out longitudinal investigations into therapeutic cannabis use among structurally-marginalized people who use drugs (PWUD);
- Contribute to the ongoing maintenance of community-recruited prospective cohorts of structurally-marginalized PWUD;
- Prepare scientific manuscripts and peer-reviewed funding applications;
- With guidance from the supervisor, apply for and secure additional salary funding;
- With guidance from the supervisor, provide leadership and supervision of research staff and trainees, as needed;
- With guidance from the supervisor, liase with research ethics boards, funding bodies and community-based partners, as needed;
- Exercise independent judgement to resolve problems, as needed;
- Manage ad hoc issues in the research group, division, or research institute as assigned by the supervisor, as needed
The successful candidate will hold the following qualifications:
- A PhD
- Extensive experience conducting independent research employing longitudinal methods to complex datasets including participant-reported data, clinical and administrative data, and data from biosampling
- Expertise in the observational evaluation of healthcare interventions among members of structurally-marginalized populations
- An established track record of publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals and securing peer-reviewed funding.
- The expected start date of this position will be March 1, 2024, or upon a date to be mutually agreed. This is a full-time term appointment subject to annual renewal.
